Barrel Galling

370bc..... I had one of the early Browning Citori's that would have rust in the barrel after 30 minutes of not brushed and oiled. It happened summer and winter.

Pawnee Bill.... I too just received my Lyman bore scope. I scoped a 223 CZ barrel and it had that etching in around 40% of the barrel. It was not from not cleaning, but determined, although not complete certainty, that it was the 2200 powder. The rifle had 1000 rounds thru it when accuracy dropped way off.

My guess it was the powder and poor barrel steel, as others have reported the same thing. The powder does not effect the SS barrels I have used it in.

I think as more folks get the Lyman borescope and check their barrels they will find some interesting things that wasn't visible with just a bore light. As a side note I have not shot any 2200 powder.

Just had one I help with. Black powder gun looked the same . Had very little pitting but a large corrison build up . Good thing that Knight makes a tool for that problem . I thought it was was pitted but it was a corrison build up . Larry
dasher, with any corrosion there will be pits. They may be microscopic, but they are there! That "corrosion" you see used to be the metal where that pit is now!

I doubt very much the 2200 powder would cause it , I've shot 16 lbs of it in cm barrels and have had a Borescope for a long long time . The powder was originally a military powder , and most military barrels have cm barrels . Etching is usually from mixing cleaning chemicals . Not all cleaning chemicals are compatible .

Pawnee Bill,
How does it shoot? That's the main thing. Haven't seen that question asked yet. Looks are one thing. Accuracy is another.
Bore scope vs target. Ill take the target every time. Just my opinion.
Take care,

It shoots fine. I was busting the 4" gong at 400 yds last week.
