barrel fouling

What can i do to foul my barrel after cleaning at two day or longer matches where i usually shoot 88 rounds a day and might have to clean part way through and might only get 2 sighters the next day.I am shooting a .284 win. it generally takes the gun 8-10 rounds to settle down after cleaning, i will be going to nationals and we will be shooting wednesday through saturday and i know i will need to clean during the week. Just wondering if there are any techniques i can use to help with this.

Dont consider this an answer, just a thought. What about saturating a couple cleaning patches with graphite and running them through the barrel after cleaning and drying. Most powders are coated in graphite to control burn rate and thus deposited in your barrel along with carbon residue to form a foul coating.

Like I said this is just a thought. Graphite can be had at any hardware store if you decide to give it a try.

Good luck at Nationals

I have the same problem with my gun. If you are concerned about F-Class Nationals, the program allows unlimited sighters during the first match of each day including 600 yards.

Sounds like you need to change your cleaning regimen or barrel . How do you clean ? You should be able to dry your chamber and dry patch any residue that may be left, prior to your match . Most barrels can deliver a sighter on the first shot from clean barrel well within the limits of your required impact point . Somethings up ?

Thanks TonyR i didn't realize we had unlimited sighters each morning, the extra shots will do me good.As far as cleaning if i have time i use foaming cleaner till patches come out clean then dry patches,1 oiled patch, then finish with 2 dry patches. Otherwise when i don't have a day or so I use GM carb cleaner for carbon, then sweets till patches show no blue, then same oiled patches, then dry patches. I always finish with dry swabs to clean out chamber and bolt lug channel . The barrel only has 300 rounds through it, dont get me wrong the gun doesn't get real crazy or anything after cleaning for those first shots, but probably opens up 1/4 - 1/2 moa for a few rounds and this is when i am trying to reads conditions and such and sometimes i wonder did i read conditions right or was it the gun. My second shot is always hot and actually will leave bad ejector rings on brass if i shoot my normal load, so i always have foulers i send through for first 3 rounds that are loaded with 4 grains less powder.

If you come to Canada, in the Ontario Fullbore Champs, there is a one minute burn-off period before the first match where the target is down and you can fire as many shots as you want into the backstop. In the Canadian Fullbore Champs, practise targets are available at the short ranges where you can buy a ticket before your first scheduled match and fire ten rounds to check zero. But a lead lapped match barrel shouldn`t require any special fouling before a competition.

Are there any thoughts on this or is it just crazy thinking.

A lot of people use Lock-Ease or Penephite to treat the barrel and keep the first shot closer to the group. When shooting naked bullets it works rather well. Shooting coated bullets I find making my own concoction with graphite and which ever bullet lube I'm using in a suspension of IPA or Kroil to work better
