Barrel Fluting?

Phil

Gold $$ Contributor
OK...This isn`t a question of flute or not...

I have the opportunity to purchase a barrel blank that is NOT fluted.

Can i have this barrel fluted before it is chambered????

I am not sure where in the barrel making process the fluting is done..

Thanks,

Phil.

Phil: I've noted your opening statement: "O.K..... This isn't a question of flute or not", but I'm still going to respond & you can take it for what it's worth, maybe nothing. ;)

From www.shilen.com. Does not recommend fluting.

From www.hartbarrels.com. "Fluting is OK if done before final lapping".

And I'm sure if you spoke to other barrel makers, you would get other responses.

Fluting????Any real metal expert I talk to says taking away any metal makes a weaker peace of metal regardless of what any one says about rigidity. Also it just seems to be asking for accuracy problems to take several strips of metal off the outside of the barrel, especially if it's the last process done. Many have fluted barrels that shoot well though so who knows. It's got to be a personal opinion thing. If your going to flute the barrel I would suggest having someone do it that will warranty the after accuracy. If anyone will. My 2 cents says don't flute it. Good luck with the build.

To answer the question posed...

Yes, you could buy it and send it out to be fluted.
I sent a Lilja back to be fluted and had MT Guns flute
A Bartlein they had in stock for me.
