barrel exchange

will a savage model 10 barrel fit a stevens action? i know
there will probably be more to it than taking 1 off and putting the other on. but that is the main question. my reason for this is the stevens are low priced and in the midway usa book the barrels are cheaply priced so i think i could somewhat create a good gun for a low price. if anybody has any input please
let me know if it helps i want a bolt action .223 i have a single shot break over but i really like bolts. so enough rambling about that. thanks

The Stevens is identical to a Savage with the exception of the trigger, and there it is identical to a pre-accu-trigger Savage. So yes, a small shank Savage barrel (model 10, 110 etc.) will screw onto a Stevens. I have done the same thing as I own 2 Stevens actions. They make great project actions! Replace the stock and trigger as well and you can build a real tack-driver for short money.

I recommend a Rifle Basix SAV-2 for a replacement trigger if you want to do target work, as they are adjustable from 4oz to 2lbs. Great trigger for the money.

2 questions, 1st will the barrel wrench in the midway usa catolog that is like 38$ work for the large and small shank?
2nd is there any place where i might be able to buy just the stevens action or will i just have to find an old gun cheap ?

i would buy a new stevens rifle that has a center feed. there are more options for this rifle than the older ones. they are like 310 dollars it is a challenge to find older ones that are cheaper although i did get lucky one day and bought an old savage in 243 that looked like it had been drug behind a truck. i rebarreled it to 7-08 and it is one of my nicest rifles. took all of about half an hour to rebarrel and trigger job look on sharpshootersupply or call them. they are very helpful.

Speak to Jim Briggs of Northland Shooter Supply about an action. He often has them for sale for less than a complete rifle, and in centerfeed design as well.

But, purchasing a complete Stevens is a great way to go as well. You can sell whatever you don't need and keep the action. You will end up with $200-$250 total invested in the action most times.

As for the wrench, most will fit on both large and small shank. I am not sure of the one you mention, but I would think so. The only special circumstance is the smooth nut, which requires a nut wrench that clamps on.
