Barrel condition questions - with pictures

The enemy of good is better! Two examples
1)a pre64 Supergrade M70 '51 vintage bore scoped by a friend has places in the bore missing 1-2mm of lands in 4 spots.Only shoots 3/8" with Bergers over IMR 4895.
2)entry level 6 ppc, 722 action,no name sleeve, bbl, cracks in stock.Previous owner sold it because someone told him it would only shoot N133& he couldn't find any! They were right! Shoots in the big 1's with 322 but 0's with 133.But don,t clean it!Takes 30 foulers to get groups down.
Lots of bore scopes out there will sell lots of new barrels you might not need.

Looks like you have some good advice.
Having had a Bore scope since 2004 I have learned a lot. 1st and formost you cant tell how well or poor a rifle will shoot by looking through that bore scope. I looked down a Ruger 77 with what looked like the worst tooling marks Ihave ever seen. Yet for some reason it shoots around 1/2MOA real consistnatly.

Want to point out that those "are" Rust pits you see. I know some folks say to never clean your barrel. I can't do that where I live now. If you live in a High Humidity part of the country like I do, that is what your going to get. Rust pits. It seems to not affect accuracy Except..... if it gets on the actual crown. Or at least that is what I have found so far. Leaving it sit for 3 years un cleaned is a huge no no for me. I might as well just toss the barrel out if am going to do that. I deep clean them before I put them up and use EZZOX or RIG from the great test done on the main page of this site.

Hope all is well and best of luck to you.

Maybe I missed it, but what degree of accuracy are you looking for? MOA is more than good enough for hunting and long-range steel etc. If you are splitting hairs, then that is something else.

A buddy of mine is a police sniper. He finally re-barreled one of his own .308 rifles after 12,000 rounds and the groups were still within hunting accuracy specs.

Another friend of mine just got a scope. He brought it out and looked at my barrels. I have a 70's model 700, 6mm that looks bad, but still puts them in 1/2 moa for the most part. I told my buddy to never bring that thing to my house again! LOL

The problem here is not the rifle. Its that he goes shooting with his buddy and his buddies gun is shooting better than his. That just cant happen.... Hell I have built a full on custom in such a situation. Cant be having my shooting friends out shoot me.... that would look..

( tounge in cheek fun post, just having fun not poking at anyone)
