Barrel cleaning problems!

Anybody have experience with Bore Tech C4 Carbon remover? I have used Carb-Out with mixed results and would like to buy something that really works on carbon rather than trying a bunch of empty promises from the manufacturers. I have Witches Brew and it does work well but just not sure how it treats the barrel in the long run.

On most guns bore-tech works great C-4 i use it a lot . But every now an then I go to TM Bore Solution it is designed for carbon . Works great I don't know what it does to barrels other than cleans them . Bore tech is not harmful I use that on my benchguns with no ill affects .

Supprised it took someone that long to mention kg cleaners. I have been using the WO/PO shootrsupply stuff for a while now. When someone told me to try the kg-12 Big bore cleaner i did. WOW i didnt think anything could work better then the wipeout or patchout but it does!

There is several things i do to a barrel when breaking it in. First off if its a factory or a hammer forged barrel the firelapping isnt a bad thing for them. I dont ever used factory barrels like that unless i have a cheaper varmit rig and then i dont really care about the copper. I shoot them until the accuracy get bad and then clean. Sometimes i have gone as long as 700 rounds without cleaning them. On a custom barrel i would never do this of course. Its just the way i feel but i never ever use a brush on a bore... EVER! What i do use brushes for is i take one thats a caliber or 2 small and put a patch over it. Then i use some 400 or 600 grit lapping compound on the first few inches of the throat for about 15-20 strokes rotating every few. Then i run issoi for about the same ammount on a new patch. After that i push all the compound out with kroil or a solvent. I use the issoi to get the carbon out using the same process with a brush and a patch. about every 150-250 rounds is a must for comp guns. I allow my barrels to go around 80-100 rounds before i try to remove the copper. They do shoot better the longer they can go.

Another thing i thought i would mention is that 22-250 and other of the hot cases do tend to foul a bit more. Even more so if you are using heavy bullets that have fairly large ods to them as well. Barnes bullets will foul your barrel more as well except the bore riders that they make. Good luck with your project.

In my honest opinion, I won't waste another red cent on Hoppes 9. All that stuff does is smell good, thats it. I've spents hours trying to get a barrel clean with Hoppes 9 and it seems the end is never in sight. Wipe Out/ Patch Out, great stuff, especially for a lazy guy such as myself. Run a patch full down the bore, walk away and come back the next day. If not clean, run another one and walk away. I love this stuff!

Are you using the Wipe Out Or Patch Out?
The Patch out is so much more economical. I've been using it for at least two years now. If I live long enough to run out of PO I'd like to try the KG-12. Supposed to be even better :-\

Don't throw away that Hoppes just yet. Either WO or PO is not the best carbon remover out there. I've found it needs just a little help. Its a copper remover first and foremost.
1 or 2 wet patches of Hoppes and a few strokes with a bronze brush. Couple dry patches then hit that bore with WO or PO. Its a cleaning regimine that works for me with a bunch of Savage tubes. My customs get the same.

Don't forget, you scrubbed that barrel good before using the WO/PO. You'll want to get the bulk of the carbon removed first also in the future. Really allows the WO/PO do do its job in one shot.
Never tried the Carb Out. Never had a reason too.

FWIW If you need Patch Out to clean a coppered barrel quick. Use a Nylon brush and keep stroking occasionally alternating between the Accelerator and Patch Out. No patches or anything just keep scrubbing with the nylon. Sometimes even us lazy guys can't wait over night.

Thanks for the heads up Joe. What I've been using is the Patch Out with the Accelerator. Where does a guy get a nylon bore brush, all I can find is bronze. I bet if I looked hard enough in my Sinclair catalog I could probably find them. I hear on not waiting, I'm not the longest on patience!

Any place you shop on the web that sells bronze brushes should have Nylon too.
Sinclairs does. Any decent gunshop should have one.

Opinions may vary but Nylon is not great for cleaning carbon. The bristles are to thick to get into the corner of the rifling. They don't scrub like a bronze.
Bronze for carbon. Nylon is good for swishing around copper cleaners, either strong ammonia or Patch Out type stuff.
Nylon does last a lot longer. You won't need a lot of them. Especially if your as lazy as I am;D

I will say one thing about nylon. Its alot tougher then you think.... Like i said before i havent used a brush on my bore for years except to use with a patch on it. I always have been warned about them, that they "can" cause damage. This is something that my father always told me about and i have this big thing about listening to him. He was always right....

We'll have to agree to diagree then Bobby.
We agree on one thing. Fathers ARE always right!!!
Gotta ask tho. Your father said its OK to shoot abrasive bullets down the barrel but no brushes?
Not judging, Not looking for a fight. I'll shoot gravel down a barrel if I thought it would help ;) ;D

LOL nope if anyone ever mentioned that to him you'd of probably not wanted to be their.... I agree with you that is something i would never do to a good custom barrel. But a hammer forged factory barrel? I just think thats a different story.

Well I have shot abrasives down a custom 243 win tube. Not a "good" custom tho. Seems this custom tube missed the handlapping department. First shot and the entire bore was orange. I hate copper!!!
Seeing as I considered it short throated for twist I fired just three 600 grit bullets down it. Moved the throat ahead .030". I stopped right there. Most folks would have just sent it back. I'm a little different. I was more than a little mad ;) Shoots good fouls little.

I've never used the Tubbs bullets.
I have the Midway/Wheeler firelapping "roll your own" kit.
I had previously decimated the throat on a factory 308 barrel using it. I know what damage they can do!!! Moved that throat ahead .100 using half of the recommended loads. It was a pig of a barrel anyway. Still collected copper like mad. No great loss.

I doubt I'll ever feel the need to use abrasive bullets again.
I will patch lap a new factory barrel that feels slightly gritty with the 600 and then JB's
