Barrel cleaning problems!

Hey all! I've been working on cleaning the barrel on my factory 22/250 to firelap the barrel with Tubb's Final Finish bullets. Mind you, I only have 133 rounds down the barrel on this rig and, I thought I was diligent and thorough on my cleaning of the barrel. It would take me atleast a half hour and sometimes as much as an hour to clean the barrel after a session. Well I decided I wanted this barrel "squeaky" clean before the firelapping and I just can't seem to get all the carbon out. I've been cleaning on this barrel four a couple hours a day for the past few days and the black s@$t just keeps coming. Is there any end to this or am I on a futile journey?

I've thrown everthing at it that I have at my disposal. I've used Butch's, Shooter's Choice, Hoppes 9, J-B paste, brake cleaner, carb cleaner, and this may sound odd but even tooth paste. Nothing seems to get all that crap out. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Mike

Sounds like a situation that happened to me once, but it turned out that the black on the patch was coming from the solvent acting on the cleaning rod. When you wipe the rod after each pass through the barrel does it show black/grey marks on the cloth?

I have run into this problem a few times and the product that seems to work the best is Witches Brew. I believe it has Kroil and a light abrasive compound in it. Soft enough to strip out carbon and all kinds of junk. Give it a try, i'm sure you will find it very useful!

when it comes to cleaning my barrels (premium barrels of course) , it takes me a LONG time. what i do after my normal brushing is to let hoppe's sit in the barrel for at least over night. then, i patch it. it will come out blue. i patch in more hoppe's and again let it sit at least overnight. then i patch it again, and if the patch is still blue, i will run some jb/kroil down and short stroke it. let it sit for about 20 min. patch it out. patch some more hoppes and let it sit over night. patch it again and the blue will start coming out and patches with be clean. i know this sounds tedious, but it gets everything out for me.

I soak a nylon bristle brush with bore-tech cr-4 and put some isso paste in a tube on the bristles and brush the bore about 10-15 strokes and then wet patch with cr-4 until clean. Must pay special attention to the throat area (where the bullet leaves the case) build up there will cause friction on your bullets. This area gets special attention with isso and nylon brush.

Thanks for all the replys everyone. The problem I have here is that I was patching the bore down with Remoil after every cleaning and then dry patching it out before I shot. Didn't know that you had to use a solvent to get all the oil out and then the oil burns and turns to carbon. Didn't know this until it was too late. I have let hoppe's sit overnight several times and it just doesn't seem to cut it. Its all carbon though, no copper. Think I might get some Wipeout with the accelerator and see if that cuts it. I now know that if I use oil in the barrel to clean it out with solvent before I shoot.

The major reason I'll have nothing to do with RemOil..
Not a good idea to shoot a greased up barrel either..

It seems you are highly focused on a clean barrel but how does that barrel shoot? Some of the F-Class and Palma shooters I compete with won't clean a barrel for 2-300 rounds at the extreme. also it really takes 200 rounds for a barrel to settle in and begin to shoot well. After 2-300 rounds carbon fouling can become an issue and agressive cleaning can be necessary. To restore accuracy that I suspect that is caused by carbon fouling I use Flitz metal polish and short stroke the bore. Some of my match barrel clean up with a minimum of work while others are more of a challange. They are different and that relates to the quality and finish of the barrel.

Tsiero, the reason I want this barrel super clean is because I am going to firelap the barrel with some final finish bullets from Tubb. From my understanding, the barrel has to be clean clean to get the full benefit from this. The gun is shooting sub M.O.A., my best group being a .277, but is a real pain to clean with all the machining marks in the barrel. Ring, I am going to order some wipeout and the accelerator from Sinclair here very soon and give that a try.

Thanks guys, Mike

I have the same question as tsiero. Why would you want to fire lap using the bullets with grit on them?
I have a 300 win mag that had horrible fouling problems and it took a loooong time to clean. After doing some testing I found that after 15 or 20 rounds it really started to shoot good. .350 at 100 yards.
Try this little experiment before you run the fire lap bullets, shoot a five shot group and measure it. Then shoot 20 rounds and then another 5 shot group. I am betting your second group will be much better than the first.
Since it is a 22-250 I am guessing that it is a varmint rifle so you would probably be better off cleaning it less to maintain the group consistency when you are hunting.
I have never used the fire lap bullets but it would seem that the bullets would loose grit as they travel down the bore so what you would be doing is wearing out the throat sooner and polishing the rest of the barrel a little.
The 22-250 is a barrel burner so why would you want to speed up the process?

Squirrelduster, you pose a good question. I just want to be able to clean the barrel easier. I am not real long on patience but, I suppose I should have taken that into consideration. Now that I look at in a different light, I guess I just wasted $40 plus dollars. However, I've wasted more on less! LOL

The barrel is clean now! Got some Wipe Out Patch Out and the Wipe Out Accelerator from Sinclair. This stuff is miracle elixir, excellent on every kind of fouling you could imagine. Great stuff!

Wipeout is great, I use it now on all my rifle and pistol barrels. You might want to try their carbon cleaner too, it is really good if you don't want to wait over night.

I'm just a casual varmint/target guy. Was having trouble with my 25-06. Local dealer that's a BR type recommended Wipe Out. After using it, I can't see ever using anything else.

Try something...clean your normal way with Hoppe's or whatever. When you think it's clean, give the Wipe Out a try before shooting it. You'll be amazed at what comes out of your "clean" barrel.

I use patch out (wipe-out liquid) and its great. Wouldn't use anything else now although I still like Montana X-treme copper cream (mild abrasive) especially on new barrels.

Had a barrel like yours on guys gun just would not get clean . I was at a shoot one time an a guy said try TM bore cleaner . If that does'nt do it it's only going to get so clean . Good stuff use nylon brush and patches should reduce your cleaning time .
