barrel break in

when breaking in a new barrel should i push a patch wet with oil down the barrel after cleaning but before i shoot the next round or shoot it dry

Factory barrel or custom barrel?? Theres a big difference there. ;)

Either way I find it beneficial to have a little lube in the tube. Not a lot, not saturated by any means but just a touch.
I'll usually put a drop of oil in the center of a patch and run it through the barrel. Then run that same patch through again to lighten it up and even it out some more.

I do the same as JO191145 but use Lockeze liquid available at NAPA auto parts. It's Colodial graphite. The carrier evaporates leaving the graphite in the bore. Another side benefit is that my cold bore shots are always right on target.

I use a few drops of kroil before i start shooting the break in. Here is another little tip that i have been using for a while now. I also work the throat before i even shoot the first rounds out of a new barrel. I use a patch and a brush that a caliber or 2 small and some 400 or 600 grit valve lapping compound. Work throat for 15-20 strokes while rotating the patch every few. Then i repeat that with jb or issoi on a clean patch then clean our with kroil. If its not coppering up a whole lot then shoot around 10 then clean again. If it is i usually clean every 3-5 rounds. Good luck with your new barrel!

Most barrel makers have a breakin procedure on their website ,they do vary somewhat but check the maker of your barrel.

If your gunsmith is using a good reamer and good shop practices, a hand lapped barrel of high quality should not require much breaking in. The only real area of concern is the throat where there is an angle at the end of the rifling The tops of the lands in this area have minute reamer scratches that should be smoothed in just a few shots. Typically, when I have gotten a new barrel for my 6PPc, I have done a half dozen, or less, one shot and clean cycles, and then a couple of cycles of shooting a half dozen before cleaning. The key is to pay attention to what your patches are telling you. If your patches are consistent with a broken in barrel....it is. Doing anything beyond that is like keeping a bandage on a cut that has already healed.
