Barrel Break In??

I have seen Gale Mcmillan's comments all over the web for years. He is talking specifically about custom precision barrels, not off the rack remingtons and rugers.

I have a different experience. For my 13th birthday in 1976, my dad gave me a rem 700 bdl in 270 Win that I still have. We went to Ben Avery and I sat there and shot it 60 straight times. After 40 rounds, the groups were opening up to over 12 inches at 50 yards with open sights. My dad said I was just getting tired, so we called it a day. When we got home and started cleaning, the barrel looked like a copper pipe. It was so thick you could see washboard in it at the muzzle. I have no doubt that cleaning every 5 or 10 rounds would have kept the fouling under control and allowed the barrel to break in. It took 2 weeks of cleaning to get it out, letting it soak overnigh with hoppes. Stuff today would probably have knocked it out in a couple hours, but we didn't know then.

Then in 99 I bought a mini14 ranch rifle. The brand new barrel was so rough I could hear and feel the cotton patchs being shreaded, and white fuzz was being left behind in the bore. I buffed it with JB until it was smoother, but it also fouled bad at first.
