barrel block

Hello everybody!

i have a project in mind using a barrel block. i have never used one before and have some questions. on a two peice barrel block is it bolt tension alone that holds the barrel in place, in if so how much tension is generally needed? my plan is to make a 2 piece block, unless i can be convinced a single piece is better. any and all suggestions and information about barrel block would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

On a 2-piece b'block it's the screws that clamp the two pieces together with the barrel in between, so in a sense the answer to your question is yes. Picky word types would go on to explain that it's the friction between the barrel block halves that provides the necessary force to hold the barrel in place, but that force / friction is generated as a result of the tension from those tightened screws.

I don't understand how you'd go about making & using a 1-piece block, unless you mean something C-shaped? I don't see how that could be of any advantage, particularly if you want to change barrels that have front sight bases attached.

Mike Ross designed, made and sold a very popular aluminum stock with a barrel block mounting system for many years. Used ones come up once in a while; he's only doing parts & repair now.

There are other examples in some bulletins on this website too; do a search using "barrel block" to find 'em.

hey thanks! thats how i thought they worked, i just wanted to make sure. the only reason i mention single piece barrle blocks is because i have seen some things online with people using them, i like the 2 peice design alot better. just making sure it is the best way to go. dont want to make mistakes when it comes to something that can possibly kill me if i do somthing wrong!

You will probably want to put an insulating nylon, delrin or phenolic sleeve between the block and the barell to help absorb vibrations and also to decouple heat transfer from the barrel to the block. I have made both 2 piece and single piece side clamping barrel blocks. Some of the single piece blocks are expoxied onto the barrel.

Have fun!

Jon
