Barrel Block Length

How long would the barrel block for a 28-30" barrel need to be? This would be a split block. Has anyone developed a formula?

I want to say that most normal small blocks that I have seen have been about 6-7". I would think these should be fine for a 30". Then they have long 9" blocks and I have seen blocks in the 4" range also. Im sure you could get away with a 4-5" block as you are reducing the leverage that the barrel has over the mounting area.

I purchased a rifle that has a short block on it but it hasn't arrived yet. I would suspect that anything that would have a foot print greater than the action would be an improvement. I will post again after I receive and shoot this rifle.

Are you planning on shooting in competition? If so, which are you thinking about? It can make a big difference.

Depends on how it will shoot. Currently it is a 7x57 22"barrel. I would like to use it for benchrest shilouette shooting. If I can get stable results from it. If the barrel block concept works, although it is a short block, I might rebarrel it to a 6.5x55 one of my favorite calibers. I found this rifle on the Shooters Corner "List" and Bob had been sitting on it for a while. We struck a "deal" and it will be shipped this week. Ihave some 156gr Carterucio 7mm bullets and want to see how it will do. Just another project.
