Barrel Blank Source

I know of the big names, but was curious what barrel blank sources y'all use? For my first couple of barrels, I'd rather not go high end in case I screw it up, so a button barrel makes more sense at the moment.

I looked at Green Mountain, but they dont offer a 6mm in 1:8 twist.

Any input appreciated.

have you practiced on take offs?? im sure guys on here would send you some...part em in front of chamber...wilson? couple krieger 8s on site today...good luck!

I got a couple GM and a few takeoff barrels to start with. I would not waste my time doing that again. I’d get a new quality strait taper barrel so you could cut it off 4 or 5 times and start over. Also you could get some steel or Aluminum bar stock cheap if you need to do that. don’t know who is the next cheapest up from GM.

Maybe @Stan Taylor could rustle up a couple oops barrels in the pile at Douglas Barrels?

Thats a good idea with the straight taper. Once I'm satisfied with chamber, can turn down taper how I want.

I have a couple button barrels that will outshoot most cut rifles barrels. I hope you are talking about price points and not grouping all button barrels into lower quality.

Green mountain would be a good place to start, or put a WTB ad out for old BR, F-class, or varmint barrels that are past "match" accuracy. You can get these barrels for little to nothing and you cut the back end of the barrel off and start from scratch. Could do this several times on one barrel. Many of these old barrels will shoot extremely well after a setback too.

Don't discount the GM barrels. Inexpensive but NOT cheap!! Got a couple that shoot bug holes with very little work. ;) But don't tell everybody cause the next time you want on in a hurry, availability and wait time will end up just like the rest.:(

Same here every one I’ve used has been very good have one of the 20 cal barrels and it is excellent

Is $100 more for a premium barrel going to ruin you? It cost the same to fit a premium barrel as a second rate barrel.... Don't regret your choice later.. Pony up the extra cash and wait an extra month or two to get the barrel fit.. I have cheaped out numerous times on both gun and non gun projects and always regretted it.. What is worse I often times had to go buy the better product in the end. So the better product is cheaper if you buy it first...

GM's 7.62x51 blanks are solid quality and an inexpensive way to learn. Turn a couple for friends, learn your feeds and speeds, taper bore, all that. They're what I learned on fire the most part. At $55 + $20 shipping they're hard to beat.

I would not start with anything premium unless it's a cheap-ish take-off. Most of them will be stainless which, in my opinion, is much easier to work with than chrome moly. Learn on the more difficult stuff when you can.
