Barrel band sling stud install

So I am thinking about installing a barrel band sling stud on a medium bore hunting rifle. Think African big bore.
What is the preferred method of machining for fit?
Do I turn a small parralel section on barrel?
Or taper bore the band?
How much clearance for the solder between the two?
Any other helpful advice on this subject? Thanks Shawn

I taper the inside of the band. The taper on the barrel is usually constant from the muzzle to where you will want to place the banded swivel stud. I wrap a single layer of 80g wet& dry around the barrel out near the muzzle and slip the band on over the paper and start 'sanding' the inside until I have it where I want it. I've been using Hi-Force 44 to attach it to the CM barrel before slow rust bluing. It's kinda' like soldering copper, you don't watch much of a gap for the solder.

Can you solder a band onto stainless?
I have never soldered a CM or low carbon steel barrel band to a stainless barrel. Try it on some scrap and let us know how it works! Soldering is 'adhesion' . so it might take a special flux and solder. Much of the clean-up can be carefully done at the buffer, the rest by hand, gunsmithing isn't all machine work. If the band is not stainless, and you mount it on a stainless barrel, how will you keep the band from corroding? Coat it all with Ceracoat?

On second thought, I silver solder pistons (which are stainless) to M1 operating rods with no problems.

Thanks alot fellas. I do plan on duracoating it once done. (I already have the duracoat and since its stainless I dont need as much protection)
Going to attempt a snow type camo, white base with dark grey sticks and such. Probly come out awful. Which being difficult to look at should help the camoflouge work right!

400 series stainless will rust, pit and corrode. Treat it as you would a chromoly barrel. It is not rustproof.

Takes more heat for silver solder than I'd care to put on a barrel, CM or stainless!

Brownells Force 44 solder is plenty strong enough for a barrel band and will survive the bluing bath. Silver "solder" is really silver brazing and needs about 1300 deg F to flow properly. This is high enough to scale the bore of a carbon steel barrel unless measures are taken to prevent scale formation.
A SS barrel probably won't scale, but why bother when soft solder is adequate.
