BARNES BULLETS

stacy

2 TIMOTHY 2 VERSE 15
Has anyone used barnes 55gr TTSX for deer size game, taking a younger out with a 223 first hunt.

Thank Stacy

I thought I remember you saying you had a 243. That with a 85 grain Sierra HPBT is a deadly combo. Way more energy and not much more recoil. The bullet kills so good that a lesser shot by a youngster might be what you need. Matt

I do I have (7) 243 all shoot 85gr sierra but little man is to small for those rifle

A .223 will work with the proper bullets and exact placement. Train him to take only the best of shots. A couple years ago I saw a nice 8 point in a truck with a small hole in the chest from a right angle chest shot. A 12yo, 80# girl proudly told me about the hunt and when I asked what rifle she used she replied " my .223."

Stacy, what twist is it? Those Barnes are pretty long. If your twist stabilizes them the Sierra 65 gr. GameKing has a great track record. If two holes are to your liking, one in and one out, Nosler makes a 64 grainer for the Tactical crowd that is designed for Windshield penetration I believe. Got a cute little lead flat nose on it but I have not tested expansion yet. I got 500 of them and really need to test. I killed two Whitetail with the 80 gr. A-Max out of my 8tw .223AI, longest at 225 yds., and never felt under-gunned. Good luck and enjoy the time spent with the youngin'! ;)

Few years back we "concocted" a load for my buddies small framed 6yo son in his .243. He could not handle full bore loads so we got some IMR trail boss powder for reduced loads. We went with the sierra 80gr blitz (softer bullet in hopes to open better at the lower velocities). We ended with a load that crono'd right around 1800 fps. The boy killed about 10 deer with that load (including one pretty nice buck) before moving up to full power loads last year. Never lost a deer, 2-3 dropped on the spot & none went further than 60 yards. The deer were all shot inside 100 yards & decent hits were made. Bullet usually exited if broadside. The recoil & report was very soft. The boy went from being scared of the gun to wanting to shoot it ALL the time.

Not that a 223 with a TSX wont work fantastically (as well as several other bullets). Just another option that will work just as well. If shots will be more than 100 yards the 223 will likely be better.

If your intersted I can look up what the exact load was. Trail boss is really easy though.

I have killed or seen killed two whitetails with 40g GSCustom HV bullets. They are vary similar to Barnes TSX/TTSX bullets (hollow point all copper bullets). Both deer made it about 10 feet before piling up. Both bullets had full penetration with one of those bullets penetrating though both shoulder of an 8 point Kentucky whitetail buck. I would not be at all concerned with using the Barnes if you have the twist to stabilize it. Go forth with confidence.

If the child is to young or small of statue/muscular strength to handle a reliable cartridge with a bullet such as a .243 they shouldn't be allowed to hunt till they are physically and mature enough to do so.
I view deer as a very majestic animal that I love to hunt.
I do not like to see them wounded or crippled with underpowered cartridges for the sake of learning a young person (or anyone else) how to shoot/hunt.
I understand your intentions but I strongly recommend you give it more thought!
Why not take her/him out ground hog hunting? They will get more shooting time in and learn a tremendous amount more .

The above is totally my opinion!

THEY SHOOT FLY TARGETS AT 100YDS WATER BOTTLES ETC.SO I'M NOT CONCERNED ON WHERE OR NOT THEY CAN HIT THE DEER IF THEY STAY COM, LOVE TO SHOOT CROWS GROUNDHOGS WITHOUT PLOBREMS JUST A SMALL FIGURE

Stacy You don't need to over think it. The 55 will work fine. Those Barnes bullets are quite long for weight.

I have used the 50gr 'or what ever they were' ones and they work very well.

I have only seen a few deer just drop from an arrow, but quite a few from the 223.

Use these and TSX as well for hunting in NZ. Load with 24gr BM2. Magnificent killer of deer. Awesome pill. Use M die to seat projectile to avoid shaving.
