Barnes 130 ttsx

I just finished up a lighter weight 308 hunting build and was wanting to try out these Barnes ttsx always heard good stuff about them never played with them before. My question is for the guys that use them is if they crimp them like is suggested on the Barnes sight I’ve read allot of guys saying they don’t and some saying they do crimp and Barnes said I should be ok without one. I bought Peterson brass and figured I was gonna try some varget under the 130s for a starting point. I think it should be a good shooting combo, just figured maybe could get some good feedback and advice for starting them.

i crimp them lightly due to the short bearing surface in the neck of a 308. Did not hurt the accuracy at all

I've experimented with both the 165 TTSX in 30-06 and the 120 TTSX in 6.5 Creed. I realized that:

A) They definitely like to jump, upwards 0.125" in both of my guns (still working on final COAL testing). Through OCW testing, I saw better results with a 0.125" jump than I did 0.050" jump.

B) I noticed decreased accuracy with a crimp, especially in the 30-06. If I were seating closer or into the lands, I'd definitely be considering a crimp. Considering these shoot so well jumped off the lands, I opted not to crimp and rely on proper neck tension. Which leads me to...

C) I employed 0.002" neck tension for both chamberings. I'm using Redding neck dies with bushings to control/set desired tension.

The family has shot a lot of deer and hogs with 125g Sierra, 125g Nosler Ballistic tip, and Accubond.

Years ago, I had a very accurate Ruger 77 tang safety with a 24" Douglas barrel on it that shot bug hole groups with the 135g sierra single shot pistol bullet. I killed 12 deer with that 135 Single shot pistol bullet at a MV of 3150 using Win 748, old Weaver Steel Lite 4x12 AO.

46.5 Benchmark in a Lapua case will get me 3,130 ft/sec and regularly shoots into 1.5'-1.75" at 400 yds

I shot an 8 point buck as it walked towards me at just over 200yds. At the shot the buck looked like it was slammed to the ground. It never even twitched. Fastest kill I ever saw.

So far I have went through just powder charges best spot I found was 47 grains of varget. With that load at the .050 off the lands they suggest to start I got 2 groups on 2 different days under a half inch one shot in each group like a quarter inch from being in the group I feel like was me. Next I am gonna to try and walk billets in deeper and shoot a few groups and see if it improves if not I am already very happy.

Tremendous preformance on 150 plus pound deer. Lot's of Varget stuffed in the case (compressed) and a light crimp with a Lee factory crimp die. Only have recovered two projectiles in forty plus deer, thirtysix inches of penetration on frontal shots. Nothing has gone more than fifteen feet from where shot.

That 130 Barnes is a deer killer. I use a slight Lee crimp.

Occasionally I find that good fortune shines when I least expect it and in some unusual ways.

I've shot the .308 Barnes solids for quite a number of years (20+) in all the various shapes they produced. They always intrigued me, even the evil blue meanies... But I didn't pay any attention for the last few years until I found a short 22" barrel in of all things, .270 bore. Surprising for my barrels since I refuse to use anything in that diameter. But somehow one snuck in under the wire and presented itself on a day I had some spare time. Enter the reamer list...

Again, somehow I found myself owning a .270 WSM reamer, brand new of course since I wouldn't have thought to use it unless requested. So I checked some numbers, made some adjustments then ordered some .277 Barnes 130 gr. TTSX bullets to use for a Javelina rifle. It's not that Javelina are hard to kill but that they are plentiful out here even though the AZG&F now charges for a ticket to shoot even just one of them. This on top of the license fee also.

Fast forward to the 22" barrel attached to a brand new M700 Carbon Steel SA magnum action with a DBM for an OAL of 2.925". Using Re26 in a nearly full case load, provided 3200+ FPS even from a shorter barrel. Those little piggies didn't stand a chance. No close shots like usual but from 2-300 yards to watch the effect of the TTSX on the pork. Drop and rolled or rolled over at impact. No bullets recovered except for one I shot from the front (400 yards) which went all the way to the tail which I did find. It looked just like the advertisements, full blossom.

Enjoy!

I found my load with 130 gr TTSX 10 years ago. Posted here by 40X guy.

I don't crimp the 130 TTSX bullets in my 308Win necks but I seat them for maximum bearing surface in the neck. My regular load shoots very well with bullets loaded .165" off the rifling.
