Barnard S Vs P?

I love my (2) P models, one is F-Open currently in a 284 Shehane, the other is a switch bolt/barrel F-TR in .223 and .308. Waiting on the .223 barrel to be done.

I love the P models' trigger, and the action is one smooth work of art. There is no doubt to the strength and rigidity of the action. I know others like the S model for the weight savings and the ability to put a Jewell or whatever in. The fact that the S drops into Remington inlets, at least theoretically, is a point in its favor too.

I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I have two P's (6br & 6.5 x 55) and 1 SM (.308). I suggest you think about what else you may want to use the rifle/action for, now and in the future. The advantage of the P is you can change the barrel or make it a switch barrel in the future to most other calibres if .223 does not work out for you. You can purchase a second bolt with different bolt face if needed (OK it costs but they will be interchangeable). Of course you can do the same with the S or SM but it may not handle some larger cartridges quite as well as the P.

For me the choice was more between what else I wanted to use the rifle for. For single shot comps I chose the P over the S because it can better handle larger calibres. For the potential to use the rifle in single and multi-shot mag fed comps I chose the SM. For F-class TR I use the SM in .308. and use the same rifle with the AI 10 round mag for speed comps.

Hope this helps you think through your choices.

Which would you pick of a .223 F/TR? What are the pros and cons between the two?

Thanks

With respect to FTR - weight is the biggest issue - in this case an S is lighter than the P. An S doesn't have the same rigidity as a P (Barnards words) but either is way more - than adequate.

I went with a S for my F/TR because we cant use a barrel heavy enough to cause any rigidity problems with this action and still stay in the weight limits. With the weight saved in the action I can get 1 profile thicker barrel.
I like the Kelbly trigger which I use in this action as well. Another reason I switched to an S action for my F/TR gun is that Ive been told the S action feeds these slimmer cases better.

With the much thicker barrels I use in F Open, I like my big P action, which I switch between 284 and short mag.

What barrel contour are you using? I was thinking of going with a 30" heavy Palma. I am debating of going with the .308 instead of the .223 now but am not certain yet.

Mine is a 32" heavy Palma. If I change to a lighter bipod, I,m hoping to be able to get the next step heavier profile next time.

What stock and bipod are you using with the Barnard S currently (FTR)?

My stock is not conventional, an Anschutz 1903 rimfire stock, light, stiff, dead and great ergonomics.
My bipod is a Davies F/TR bipod with rear adjustment.

Thanks - I have been having trouble finding a good combination that will work with the Barnard.
