Barnard P action in a Anschutz Precise stock

Anyone have this combo? Wondering what tribulations you had to get it setup nicely? I have the setup, but don't like that I can't open the bolt completely because the cheek gets in the way. It opens just enough though. If I get a higher sight mount, I have to get a new front sight.. Ugh!! Other than that the combo is super in position.

Thanks,

Chad

I’ve been shooting that since 2014. I just chopped the front of the cheek piece off so the bolt clears.

Can't do that. As I have it set up if I did that I wouldn't have much to lay my cheek on. I'm already slightly forward of the cheekrest and I don't like that either. If I go further back I struggle to reach the loading port more than I like. I guess being short isn't ideal either.

I believe John Whidden basically uses his cheek piece as a bolt stop on his rifle; it’s set as far forward as it can be that will still allow the bolt to travel rearward enough to get an empty case out of the action. I know that on my rifle, there’s no way that the rear sight could be mounted low enough to allow the bolt to travel over the cheekpiece. When I shoot at 1000 yards, my front sight is on the lowest notch possible with the rear sight at about the middle of it's travel, so there’s no room to go any lower(gain elevation). If the rear sight was lowered to get the cheek piece lower for the bolt to clear, I would not have enough elevation to be able to hit the target.

You might need to look into getting a “flipper” style cheekpiece if the regular one absolutely won’t work for you. Anschutz makes (or at least used to make) an insanely expensive flipper that might solve your problem.

Thought I heard Erud was selling his Barnards and his Precise stock. It was on the internet someplace and must be true.

Speaking of insanely expensive, Grunig made the one that I'm aware of (link below). Not sure if/how well it mounts to the Precise hardware, though. Anschutz may have made one, too, but I've never seen one if they did. If John Whidden doesn't know about it, I would reach out to Joe Hein at Elite Shooting Sports in Montana; he's been my go-to for some non-routine Anschutz parts, and is a great guy to work with. I believe he, too, shoots a Precise stock for his fullbore action, though I may be misremembering that.

I shoot a Precise for my smallbore stock, and decided to go with an Eliseo tubegun chassis for my Barnard instead. Price was definitely a factor (~$1000, as opposed to $2000+), but the fact that the tubegun chassis specifically allow the bolt to run underneath your cheek without special setup was a big plus (I shoot a very tall position in smallbore, so the added height from the tubegun was an asset for me). The only things the Precise has that the Eliseo doesn't is a cheekpiece that's adjustable for windage in position, and a laterally adjustable grip. The grip piece I don't miss: it takes AR grips, so there are loads out there, and building them up is fine with me. I also haven't missed the lateral cheekpiece adjustment in position, either. If you decided to go that route, I'm confident you could sell your Precise and more than finance your tubegun and new front sight. Square-action stocks have gotten hard to find of late, so the used market is quite favorable for sellers last I looked.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Oh yes, I have two of them (and promptly made High Master in Mid-Range prone, once I started using one!), but it's not laterally adjustable on the fly in position like the Precise hardware. That doesn't seem to be an issue, either for me or for any of the folks using them to great success!
