Barnard Actions - Question

Just wondering why you seldom see a used or new Barnard action for sale, as a complete rifle or separately.

Curiosity!

Think obout it. i have two & they are better then most
action incluring the best. look @ palma shhooter what they use
besides it cames with a trigger. to me barnard are top of actions
in the market

I can't imagine selling my Barnard action(s). I don't know that they are functionally any better than BAT or other top end actions, but unless you have to have a polished action, I can't think of a better value/performance option.

I would venture to guess you don't see many new advertised because they are made in NZ and AFAIK, MT Guns is the only US distributor. You don't see many used because there are probably not as many out there in the US as other US-made actions and I'd guess that the people who own them, feel like I do about them.

Barnard is a great action for sure, but i think the reason you dont see many for sale is because there are fewer of them in this country than other US made actions. Lee

I shoot with several who use Bernard's! They love them! I tried finding one used, but it looks like if I want one it will be new!

I have two, and would grab another one without hesitation if I ever saw one. The trigger is pretty nice too, and it exceedingly adjustible. There are now several folks shooting with me in F-Class on my home range that use them.

MT guns is the only authorized importer, so talk to Mack. If you have your smith get one for you he'll be getting it from MAck.

As a kiwi I wish Barnard's would make a rem 700 long action repeater clone in stainless something like a stiller predator, that took a drop floorplate style or even blind magazine. The model PM only takes expensive HS magazine's and its a short action.

It's difficult for us to get custom actions into the country for hunting rifle builds....

no one manufactures carbon or glass stocks here commercially either as far as I know either :(.

In Australia, Barnards are the most common action used in Target Rifle and F class. You dont see many 2nd hand ones here though, they usualy hang onto them and get rid of the others. Nice simple actions which work well without any bells, whistles or shiny bits.

You look up and down the firing line at some of the matches here in the Southeast and you see quite a few of them at the bigger matches.
Must be true about the 'keeper' status, you rarely see one sold on this or any other sights.
They are not flashy, however, they're built like a tank.

Great info - Thanks

Well what are the attributes of a Barnard action that would make it a popular choice over others?
I'm sure it comes down to shear sales, and that often comes down to aftermarket potential.

You see Rem700s most often, and IMO, it's not a great action.
Well, great for gunsmiths...
But ANYONE can screw together a gun with them, much like a Savage.

It's built like a tank. 3-lug design means it locks up tight as a drum. Very tight tolerances so no need for any additional truing, blueprinting, etc. Comes with a top-notch, fully-adjustable trigger included in the $1300 price. What's not to love? I had my Palma rifle built on one and am currently having a LR "Any" rifle built on another.

MT Guns is the best gunsmithing company I've dealt with for customer service. No BS time quotes and great communication. They told me the barreled action for my Palma gun would take a couple of weeks once they had the barrel. Well, they got the barrel on Monday morning and the barreled action was on the UPS truck heading my way on Wednesday afternoon.

Not to mention Mac does EXCELLENT work....

+1 on MT Guns. Not sure that Mac is doing any of the smithing though. They also have a pretty extensive barrel inventory too, so you may not have much waiting on delivery of a barrel.

Your budget shooter usually starts out this way, with a Remington, till the Savage improved their game. Still Remingtons are kinda favored by the tacti-cool crowd. I am a budget shooter, but have decided that from now on, it will be a Barnard action. I have once as right now and will prob order another next year. Though, I do have my eye on one more Remington, but it is a 40X in 300WM. I am really just after the action and the rear sight. I am going to sell the front sight, bbl, the stock and the trigger.

338 lapua, yes, we get charged more for them even though our dollar is higher and we live next door to the factory sort of. Thats the thing I dont like about Barnard excessive mark ups just coz we always beat them in sport, looks and IQ tests. :P
But then, we even pay more for Australian made actions than they do over seas, so???????
BTW 338, the price for the P model Barnards is now around $1600-1700, you were probably quoted for the bigger sized action, is that right?

What I do like about the Barnard is that its tolerances ARE NOT TOO FINE. If I get some dust in the action when shooting F class on a dusty mound, or get powder fouling from using dirtier powders, it doesnt jam up like my Panda does.

Hi cr500, I wanted to use the SM model for a 308 w because it accepts a 5 or 10 round HS Precision magazine.. Apart from the price…. No one at the time had any information about fitting a Barnard action to the AICS, even Barnard hadn’t done one at that stage, so I played it safe and went with a Surgeon 591, which by the way was just as expensive by the time it landed here and this model required painting or Parkerizing…. But i new this action would fit directly into the stock with “almost” no mods at all.

there is a guy at my range that has a barnard. I was curious about it and he let me shoot his gun. This was about the 2nd week after I had my dream rifle delivered, which was, in every way imaginable, my dream rifle. And I have been lusting after a barnard and trying to find any excuse to order one since I fired his gun... Shot lots bats, that never happened...

maybe you gotta cycle one just to feel it to understand. fully, fully lust worthy.
