Barnard Action

Thinking about a Barnard action build. Which action is best for 30-06 length round? I have been building tactical stuff lately but I am now wanting something with more of a solid classic look and feel. I do love a walnut stocked rifle.

I run Barnard "P" actions for F-class with a COAL of over 3.1". Mine are single shots.

The difference comes if you want to load from a magazine or eject a loaded round. A longer action would be needed for that.

In a magazine feed there isn't really an action that's appropriate the SM is a short action and the PLM is for Lapua magnum sized cases which is a little big.

We used a P model with and one without an Ejector yesterday at a mid range match. Both shot extremely well. Some suspect you could get slightly better accuracy without an ejector and run a bit higher pressures if you are looking for a certain "max", however in a hunting rifle I would definitely want an ejector.

Matt P is right on, Model S for single shot, SM for a repeater. Our P models are exceptional, but any new builds will use the slightly smaller S.

Majority of my F Class customers use PE(jector), I don't see a reason not to have an ejector and my fat fingers don't fit in the port that well !!
Barnard also offer a PC(ustom) which come in RBLP and RPLPRE and the left hand versions.

I can't imagine not using an ejector. My P can eject loaded rounds at right about 3" OAL with the bolt stop in the forward position - maybe a little longer. You can increase that to about ~3.4" by flipping it to the rearmost position. Not sure if that will handle a loaded '06 or not.

I,ve used both Barnard p and Barnard sm actions. They may not be pretty to look at but their quality is second to none. All mine have an ejector. One issue I've come across with the ejector models is at high pressure with .308 in the sm and with 6.5 x 55 in the p model is the ejector pin shaving brass off the case head and eventually the ejector pin gets stuck in the retracted position. Easy to fix but it recurs.

As an F class shooter and multiple Barnard user, I use the following in my Barnard actions

I know a lot of shooters who use 280AI in a Barnard P which is same length as a 306. Even if the loaded round will not eject out of a P action, it is very rare that you have to eject a loaded round, but it takes less than a second to pull the bolt all the way out with no extra fingers or buttons etc needed.
I have ejectors on mine. If pressure is high enough to start shaving metal of the bases, then pressure is high.
