Bare to moly then back to bare bullets

If I started out using bare bullets in my stainless steel barrel then used moly coated bullets in the same barrel, can I go back to using bare bullets? Or is there a cleaning process that needs to be due before to remove the moly?

Ron

In my experience, the best cleaning process to remove moly after using it on bullets for a while is to simply change the barrel.

SSL, thanks. Should I plug the barrel, pour it in and let it soak? Or swab it like I'm using regular barrel cleaner such as Hoppe's No. 9?

Ron

Just clean with a normal good solvent/copper cleaner, then use Kroil and let it soak in a couple of hours and then brush (nylon preferably) with Kroil let soak 15 min. and then dry patch. I have done this for years and never had any issues.

I just clean with patches and then regular cleaner and finish with oil. Only did it a few times since my moly experiments were a disaster as far as accuracy went.

Depends on how many moly shots went down the bore. It layers onto itself, constricting the bore eventually(if not managed along the way). JB bore cleaning compound & Kroil for tight spot removal.

i have used vinegar to clean moly off from bullets with relative ease , dont see why it wouldnt work on the barrel

I did the same switch many years ago in a 22-250 and used Boretech moly magic during regular cleaning and also JB. Patches came out squeaky clean and I never seemed to have any problems.

I shoot moly in all my rifles, after I clean them (kroil, boretech carbon, patchout) they are as clean as when they were fitted. Start with some kroil and let it sit, that first patch will be as black as a mother in laws heart

If you have not tried using the wet method of applying molly, You might want to give molly another try. You will be surprised.

I have to agree with using the wet method of applying moly. What a wonderful change with even better results.

Yeah, me too. The wet method is easy and clean. It produces bullets which look like they're black chrome plated. The Moly doesn't rub off on anything and, in my several target rifles at least, doesn't "cake" or "build up".

I clean my rifles using normal methods and tools and my bore is always clean when I'm done.

Thanks guys for all the recipes on getting rid of the moly in barrels, I should be able to get any barrel clean now. Does the same go for HBN?
