ballistic software

i hope this is the right spot for this post, but i was wondering where do you get such stuff that you can calculate bullet performance. if i have miss understood could someone please help me clear this up. i have seen many posts where people
have mentioned computing numbers to reach a specific fps or something to that effect with i guess just their computer and some other stuff. so where do i find it and do i really need it for just recreational shooting and hunting?
any advice on this would be great .

JBM Ballistics has a free internet accessible ballistic calculator on their website that is great. Allows you to imput all your information about the bullet, velocity, ambient weather, and distance & ranges. You can then print out a ballistic card you can use at the range, match, or while hunting. Great program.

jraney,
With most of the free Ballistic programs out there you can drop in random figures and runnthem with results. But most require a velocity plugged in to find the other variables.
Unless you KNOW the fps it's all really guess work.
IF you have a long range, say out to 400-600 then you can take the drop diffrences between say 100 and 600 and run the numbers against the program and come up with a velocity, but that would require a know level plane and target hight. Either way it's gonna cost.
Look around for a friend with a chronograph or get an inexpensive one for 100'ish and the ballistic programs can then give you some real #'s.
