ball powder recomdation for .223

I am looking for the most accurate ball powder for mid weight .223 bullets, 50-69 grains. Right now I am using 748 and it is not bad. It is not as good as varget, but meters much better. What should I try next?

Thanks!

Ramshot TAC, H335...

25.0-25.5gn H335 behind a 50-53gn bullet is one of those loads that if it don't shoot... there is either something wrong with the gun or the trigger puller ;) 26.5-26.8gn W748 is another one...

~23.5gn TAC behind a 75-77gn bullet with a *light* crimp seems to be a pretty close duplicate of the Blackhills blue-box loads with the same bullets, and shoots pretty good also... but only if you crimp it (seems to need the higher start pressure).

YMMV,

Monte

I generally avoid ball powders because they are very dirty (carbon), but one of the cleanest burning I've found is H335, and it is my standard for the AR-15's with bullets in the 55 gr. weight range.

You could try H322 or N133 powder. Benchmark is another one that comes to mind. None of them are ball powders, but they meter very well and accuracy can be outstanding. The kernels of all three are smaller than Varget. I use all of the above over ball powders because that stuff gets all over the place when I reload and most of them are dirty burning.

What about BLC-2,AA2230,AA2200,. Blc-2 at around 23.5 to start.Consult your hornady manual,or whatever you have.

I use AA 2520 in all my semi auto .223's with 69 grain Match Kings. Goes thru the powder measure like water. I use almost the exact same charge weight as with Varget for the same results.

I use TAC for my short line loads, 23.5 over a Nosler 77, I have found that it is more accurate then RE-15 in my rifle. As far as being dirty, I don't see a big difference. Interesting note, in fire forming some 308 brass, I used TAC over Varget ( not wanting to waste it for FFing) , and found great accuracy with 175 SMK's.

As ball powders go, meters great.

Do you use magnum primers with the Win 748.
That made a difference for me with the level of accuracy.

The superformance varmint ammo from Hornady seems to burn very clean so far for me so you might consider it when it becomes available.
