Ball powder for match loads ?

cjmac said:
So is anyone using a ball powder in 223 for match loads ? Im wanting to use ball powder because it flows much better in a measure . Im wanting to get where i can load at the range. Would like to take primed cases , powder , measure , and seating die with arbor press . And my OAL tool
I've used Win 748 in the 223 with 52 gr bullets in a Rem Mod. 700 varmint, with iron match sights, prone position at 200 yds, I could stay in the X ring of a reduced 600 yd slow fire target all day if I read the conditions right.

Most close range bench rest guys don't weigh charges they drop powder loads, and they shoot super small groups. Might want to ask them since they aern't guessing.

Few (if any?) serious benchrest guys are using .223's. One thing is for sure, dropping charges for a .223 will typically produce far larger groups than doing so with a 6PPC! The PPC's (as well as most cartridges with a larger powder charge) are a bit less sensitive in this regard. One can surely do it (and successfully), but the results are seldom comparable.

Conditionally they must work in some instances or set ups. We had a few fellows shooting H414, and 748 in matches. Both were VERY competitive. :) WD

My 6PPC uses 28.3 grains of H322 , my 223 uses 25.5 grains of win 748 not exactly a whole lot of difference. The bench guys I shoot with load with a Harrells powder drop and can throw a charge almost as close as I can with my charge master and a whole lot faster. But if the OP is going to shoot to a 300yd max the charge weight weighed to .001 of a grain isn't the limiting factor.

I suspect the 6br's more likely have tight necks, and the .223's more likely don't. I would at least suggest that such might be another significant difference.

All my rifles have SAAMI chambers with no turn necks. They do not shoot with the BR tuned rifles, but then, I'm not asking them to. The only shooter I ever compete with is myself, and often enough, I get beat.

Obviously, I don't shoot serious bench rest. It's just a personal choice. I'm probably not the only one here, either...

For match loads? The tried and true continue to be relied upon.

Reloader 15 and Varget meter very smoothly, IMR4895 and 4064 also. The longer stick powders like 4350 and 4831 though will break sticks in a measure, but not using them; are you???

Want to improve your metering? Polish the inside of your measure, use a powder diverter, and mount with a non-flexing base; also establish the right rhythm for operating your measure handle.

Are you verifying your scale to your load? Check weight set enables you to Be Sure you're getting the exact weight you desire. May as well go the whole route if gonna worry about metering of your powder in a .223rem.
