Bags

I have hunted and done a little shooting from a rest to test out loads and sight in new guns or scopes but am starting to take shooting from a rest a little more seriously. Accordingly, I am looking at getting some real rests instead of the make-do things I have been using. I am a bit confused by the large variety of bag materials. Protector seems like a decent brand of bags, Sinclair sells them anyway and they seem to be pretty serious about accuracy, and they make both all leather and leather bottoms with nylon uppers. Which is better? If nylon is better, what about the Caldwell bags that are all nylon?

For the front rest, does anybody like the 3 lobe bag that comes on the Caldwell rest or does everybody get one of the owl ear or flat type front bags?

I've also noticed one piece rests which seem to have solid nylon supports. It seems like the gun would jump away from solid supports so I am not sure what that is all about but the guys using this type seem to know a lot more than I do. That is not the end of things I am at right now so this is more of a curiosity question. My main decision at the moment is what type of bag and then what to fill them with.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Jim

I have the full caldwell set up. After using it for 6 months I am reasonably happy with the BR front rest and am in the market for Protektor bags. I added the caldwell 2" bag to my BR rest for my Savage factory BVSS stock. It works ok. The rear caldwell just seems too soft. I am going to my first BR match this weekend and hope to try out several bags before I order my new ones.

I bought a 50lb bag of sandblasting media at Northern Tool for less than $5.00.

Foundry supply stores are good places to buy sand if you don't want to pay to ship a bunch of sand. I bought a 50-lb. bag of chromite sand for less than it would've cost to get a bag of zircon shipped. It has about the same specific gravity of zircon sand.
