bag balm

While at the range a fella said he uses "bag balm" ( udder balm) for case lube.....is it pressure strong I wonder? ,,,,,,,,anyone use it?

I have used the bag stuff on my hands before and after exposure to cold salt water and I imagine it would work great for hands exposed to the same in any shooting event. I don't think I would eat Bag Balm or use it to lube brass cases.

It has lanolin it which some people use for case lube. The rest of ingredients probably won’t do you any good..

Hornady Unique works well and you get to inspect each cartridge before going into the sizing die. really simple

I'm a fan of bag balm for dry skin and cuts/scrapes. It's a bit too sticky and messy (I think) to even consider using as a case lube. Especially when Imperial and Hornady lube exists, and cost about the same.

edit: Also, bag balm stinks.

A dab of bag balm on top of black powder pistol loads ensures there is no flash-over between cylinders and it keeps out most of the water if you shoot in the rain. It or Crisco is the recommendation for black powder pistol to top off the cylinders.

I have 1 ruined die with a case stuck in it because of bag balm. Because of that I ended up doing an experiment with bag balm against lanolin+alcohol against Hornady One-Shot against Imperial lube against Lee lube. The test was with a die that is insanely tight and brass that was run through a machine gun with a hot dog in a hallway kind of chamber and needed some pretty aggressive resizing.

Bag Balm: Belongs on teats, not on brass. Singularly the worst performer. I found it to have next to no lubricating properties and it goes on thick making for dents in cases.

One-Shot: Good up to a point if you're not aggressively sizing but required a huge amount of lever force, sometimes involving a sledge hammer.

Lanolin+Alcohol: Quite a bit more effective than One-Shot but still had to hit the press arm with my hand pretty hard.

Lee Lube: Actually pretty darned good. Comparable to Lanolin+Alcohol but seemed to work better with these MG fired cases.

Imperial: Slick as snot. Sizing force was still pretty high but lowering the ram only needed a firm jerk on the handle, no hitting.

I have stuck cases in dies with every lube I've ever used EXCEPT for Imperial. YMMV.
