Bad luck with Gempro

Well I've had quite an experience with the gempro 250 these past two weeks. As I stated in an earlier post I bought a gempro 250 with the idea of upgrading my scale. The first scale arrived and I was able to use it a total of one day before the bottom dropped out. It seemed to work fine the first day, but when I tried to use it the next day, got an "err 0" message. Contacted Myweigh and the vendor JTV that I bought it from. Myweigh said to send it in and the vendor JTV said to return it for an exchange or refund. I went the exchange route, thinking surely I would have better luck next time. Fat chance, I just now finished repacking the gempro for a return trip to the vendor, this one would not even turn on. I don't really blame the scale but the packing job done by the vendor, seems to me to have been inadequate both times given what was being shipped, although they did place a "handle with care" sticker on the package this time.On the plus side both Myweigh and JTV are upholding their warranties. Well it's on it's way back this time for a refund and I am thinking the next time I buy an electronic scale I am going to get one personally from a store, or from someone who does a better packing job. I've learned a lesson and I see my luck is still holding steady.

the bottomof the weight fell off mine as i took it out of bx. then the more i looked at it the more i knew i just couldnt get a hold of that little plastic cup sent it back they took it off my card and i bought a 1500 rcbs & very happy with it very user friendly no boubt the gempro 250 would be a good scale but not for me regards shooter63

I just bought one as well. I haven't had a problem as of yet. It has worked flawless.

I've seen you post this two or three times now and I still can't wrap my head around this statement:

"the bottomof the weight fell off mine as i took it out of bx."

What bottom of the weight? A check weight (as far as I am aware) doesn't have a separate bottom- it's a single, solid piece of metal that is used to calibrate your scale. It's not that I don't believe you, I just can't picture what you are talking about. Maybe GemPro changed something, but I can't even find a picture of something like you describe...

This what the weight that came with mine looks like:

the bottom of the weight that came with my scales looked like it had been threaded for a small screw in the center bottom but no threads a small peice of metal and what looked like a small peice of stripped threads fell out regards shooter63

I'm still using mine, but I do keep a very watchful eye on it. Seems periodically, the tare will jump for NFR, and if you're not paying attention, you adjust the powder charge without knowing that you are now light. I HATE having to pull brand new reloads!

That said, it has happened 3x and I've used it for at least 12 sessions. I have seen a reduction in vertical after using it, assuming I'm doing my job, but I can't quantify it. (I had been using a Hornady beam.)

I'm sure you realize this, but to re-emphasize that with a scale as sensitive as the GP 250 it is very important to ensure you have it on a good solid surface, perfectly leveled, close the cover when weighing to ensure no breezes or your breath interferes, and put it in a place where it isn't going to be moved and re-leveled a bunch. Don't want to be putting it away and taking it out to re-level and set up every time. Should be much more consistent that way. I have not had any problems with mine by ensuring it is set up perfectly and never moves.

I also have a RCBS 750. Whether using my GP 250 or my RCBS, I make sure to calibrate the scale before every reloading session. That should always be a common practice with any electronic scale regardless of consistency. Otherwise you just risk the chance of something being out of spec. No sense in gambling if you want to make absolutely sure you get the best ammo possible every time.

You are going to think I am weird, but here is a fix to the Error O :

Turn the entire scale upside down after taking the pan and extra metal "upside down" pan off and gently shake it. Then put everything back in place and it should work again.

Mine worked fine then started giving me the error message - did the above thinking a powder granule was stuck in the scale and it has worked perfectly ever since.

Go figure..................

Same issue - same fix.
Grain of H4350 stuck in scale.

Long term update:
The Gempro 250 has performed very well for the remainder of 2012. I had only 1 instance of the tare changing since my first post on the topic. In my first 3 matches using the 30BR I have dropped only 1 point (out of 1500) and shot 97 "X"'s. Can't beat this scale for the price, and it will reset itself if you can figure out the lousy instructions.

I bought a Gempro250 and used it one time on batteries b4 find that was not a good idea. I loaded 60 6.5x47L It was amazing weighing one grain to make weight Came back 2 days later and it would not turn onI finally put in new batteries and every thing was perfect. Four days later same thing.I took the batteries out and plugged it into the big voltage regulater thingy (Offered on this site years ago). Works without a hitch. Can't believe one granule makes a difference but won't turn my back on the accuracy.

I had some problems with the readings changing on my Gempro . I rang up the vendor and took his advice about static wipes and it seems to have fixed the problem. I use the wipes before and after each reloading session.

Mine arrived safely in a protective plastic box that had a hinged lid and it's worked fine from the start.

One thing, I find it certainly needs at least 24 hours to warm up, I can't leave mine permanently plugged in so just have to plan my reloading a day or 2 ahead. It's also sensitive to air currents, open doors as other have soad in other posts.

Great value for money.

I've had mine now for a few months (upgraded from the RCBS 750). I typically leave it on all the time on my reloading bench. I've got a block under the scale that keeps the vibrations down during powder drops. I too turned mine on, calibrated it and then left it on for 24 hours.

The only time I notice any deviation in the scale reading is if I'm sitting down and happen to breath heavy towards the scale (my own fault) otherwise it's been a great scale.

I replace GemPros with tuned beam scales on a regular basis. A properly tuned beam scale used with one of Stan's Omega tricklers makes for one very slick and extremely accurate powder dispensing system.

It's been over a year since my original post about my bad luck with the gempro and I am amazed that this post is still getting any hits. What this says to me is that my experience might not be as rare or be shipping related as I once thought. I absolutely detest things that are finicky, If I have to turn the thing on 24hrs beforehand or leave it on all the time, turn it upside down, wipe it with a static wipe, make sure there aren't any stray air currents etc. I would just as soon stick with my balance beam and spare myself a lot of aggravation, this is what I have decided to do. To all those who have had good luck with the gempro I think that is great. Now that I've got that out of my system have a good day !
