The girl friend and I went out today and shot some dogs. Beautiful day with no wind, rare for WY, with lots of sunshine the dogs were out playing. I went 8 for 12 from 150 to 250 yards with the .223. The girl friend started out with the 17 HMR and went 4 for 20 from 100 to 150 yards. Moved to the next town and we are close, max range is maybe 175 yards. I set the table up and she starts shooting. She went 25 for 50 in that distance, including saying out loud "Stop moving so I can shoot you damnit" ;D That was a small town so its smaller now.
Next town and when we stop all I can hear is the dogs barking at me for invading their territory. I unload the 17 because they are close in like 30 yards. All the noise goes dead silent and they are gone, gone out to 300 yards or more. The girl friend says hey look there's a hawk...sure as hell he's circling about 50 feet off the ground. So lunch time break out the sandwichs and see what happens.
The wind comes up going left to right from about 2
'clock at 10~15mph. Well damn...almost all my shots here will have this damn wind at the side. One dog sneaks his head up about 30 yards from the truck so I pop him. She says you missed. No I didn't, go look. She walks over and says his body is gone but part of his head and a lot of blood everywhere is still here. I guess a 17HMR at close range will pop a dog...
I really wanted to get the 20 practical out but the dogs were staying inside the holes and clouds were rolling in. I have the 20 zero'd at 200 and 6 clicks gets to 300 and 7 more is 385. After about 15 minutes there was 3 dogs playing out about 300 I guessed. ( News flash- a Weaver laser range finder cant range a prairie dog past about 150 yards on a good day so my distances get estimated on dog towns often) First shot and I'm 3 feet low and 4 feet to the left. Uhh 6 clicks wasn't enough so lets add a few more like say 4. And 4 clicks for wind. Bang and I miss again, still low and left. 5 shots later with 3 more clicks for elevation and 17 added clicks for wind the first one goes flop. 2 more shots and 2 more dead dogs and everyone is back underground...
