bad 6mm barrel

I got a 6mm barrel give to me from a friend. he said it won't shoot it was chambered in 6 br and he was a good shot a good benchrest shooter
. so needed project. i'd chamber it in 6bra. at lease would have a fire form barrel . so I cut it off at 25 1/2 inches long .
recrowned it and chambered it it looked good reamer went in at about .0002 all is good . Not! it shot at about .600 with
good loads .it had reverse taper only .0001 maybe .0002 so I cut it off again and tried it same thing .6to .7 velocity sayed amost
the same ? so i got aother idea try a tunter so i installed the turner and went back to the range . horrible 1.25 to 1.375..
even took it off no good . so back to the cave and i cut it off again this time the barrel pins better at 22 inches long .
but i don't expect much . first group was around .6 but on the third firing there a little tight . second group was a low
.5 got a couple of fire form shot in between . I had to take one out chamber let fellow shooter set his target up. pulled the
bullet out of the case powder in the action . bad . blew it out best i could . shot a mid .3 wow . shot a another group this time
I put 4 bullets in the same hole low low .1 the fifth shot is tight powder in the action . I didn't want to stop so i shot it any way.
it didn't go in but it was still a .5 the bolt was so tight i took it home to spray oil in the action. to keep it from galling. I'm never
going to win a bench rest match with this barrel .but I learned a few things along the way one was watch threading your muzzles .
the other is some times barrel length can cause problems on marginal barrels. my last Kieger was ok at 28 inches at 26 inches
it was marvelous great barrel. this was kinda long hope I didn't bore you guys . Rick

This thread takes me back to why I seriously stated down the tuner path, years ago. One of my best bbls I've ever had was a two owner bbl(previous to me) where both previous owners said the bbl was junk. I set it back WITHOUT INDICATING ANYTHING at all, in a 3 jaw, as all I wanted was a fireform bbl for cheap. On that action and stock combination, it flat ass shot great. Go figure! When tuned up, it won a lot of matches. Remember, two previous owners said it wouldn't shoot and I chambered it in a 3 Jaw!!! I think there are sometimes times that defy common thought on bbls, tuners and what a "hummer" really is...or isn't. Test things for yourself. That means more than you can ever learn on the innerwebs.

when I put a turner on the barrel I indicate to .0001 and use .0001 pins I didn't use the pins because
it was a 7/8 dia. 32 pitch I thought it wouldn't get bigger it was a Butten barrel . I use a buck chuck
self centering and a spider on the back of the lathe . but learned a few things with barrel. this barrel
starts out .2373 and it like it gets bigger about 9 inch's down the barrel and then gets smaller.
this barrel should made it of the factory .and it was also chamber at the factory ?

a tuner and wind flags make crappy barrel a hummer......IMHO of course :D
A well tuned rifle is a joy to shoot, by whatever means, but I agree with you. And flags, I consider to possibly be the most important tool to shooting really small consistently. A well tuned, great shooting rifle really shows just how important flags are and shortens the learning curve exponentially. You simply can't learn to read wind with a gun/tune that you can't trust.

I too bought a used Bartlein dasher barrel for my BAT with the intent on using it as practice. Don't know why the fellow parted with it, but it outshoots my other barrels by a large margin.

The barrel is just one part of the equation. The action and stock is the rest. An under performing action or stock can easily make the barrel look bad. And vice versa.

but when get same results off two different actions you might say there's a problem. and now this barrel was a 9/16 group kinda rifle and when end up cutting down to 22 inches and it's shooting 4 tenths and most
groups first three shots shoot real small like low .1's low .2's I actually think there more there if cut it again
but its already short for a bra . and looking for a new project like a 2500x .trying to get parts. rick
