Back to the Good Old days

Same here. Oscillating fans only though.

Went to bed on summer nights to the sound of Cicadas and Katydids. You would have thought they were amplified somehow. For anyone who isn't familiar with those sounds, give this a few seconds of your time and imagine sleeping to it:
I wouldn't hear any of them for the non stop ringing in my ears. Some have suggested I get hearing aids. I say why ? To amplify the problem ?

Yesterday morning my daughter catches me as I'm headed downstairs to get some coffee. She says, "the AC isn't working". The first response was, "SOB". The thermostat was dead. Checked the fuse box, and all was good. Not being versed in these things I did the next best thing. I poured myself a cup and thought about it. Well, gotta call an AC guy. Was headed to the phone when a desperate thought hit me. The thermostat is dead so the unit isn't being sent power. Replaced the batteries, and the Thermo lit up and the AC started running!! Thanked my lucky stars and got ready to start my day.

Houston area
95 degrees out and 58% humidity. Feels like temp is 101. Friday afternoon, 6:30 PM. A/C goes out.

Forgot how hot it can get around here without a/c.. Left home at 20 and never spent one day with air conditioning in the house. I didn't see any cool air for the next 4 years either..

On the bright side, I did find someone that will be out in the morning. Why does it always seem that whatever breaks it is always on a Friday afternoon. Another ray of sunshine is that it is not a 4 day weekend.
The gulf coast area around Houston is the arm pit of the United States.

I live here for one reason. Money.

Yup, it's been and will continue to be a hot one here in Texas. We haven't had a decent rain in South Texas since Thanksgiving of last year and have been dancing, praying or whatever for a nice tropical depression to mosey up the Rio Grande. Wildlife, cattle and stock ponds are all suffering.
I seen where farmers are selling all livestock because of the drought in Texas, meat prices will go down for a bit then skyrocket

I moved back to Florida when I was about 22 and was poor/cheap so I didn't run the ac for about 3 years, until a female moved in. But those first 3 years I was used to it and could fall asleep sweating when it was 90 at midnight and work over hot engines all day. Once the ac went on that's when the heat started to get to me. I should never have turned it on.

Grew up in the high country of Arizona, on a ranch. Grandpa was the kind to not spend money on something as frivolous as AC, product if the Great Depression. i remember drinking a gallon of water a day and sweaty wet shirts and the end of the day. When I moved back to this country we had AC and I felt like a king, spoiled. We built a new house a couple years ago, it’s completely off grid. We have AC but rarely run it unless the sun is out. Opening the windows at night can actually get chilly as dawn approaches, we’ve learned to adjust and it hasn’t been bad.

Thinking of getting out of here again . Almosdt every summer I swear this is the last one . But where to go ? We , my family has 500 plus acres outside Horseheads New york , but its all our hunt camps and in NY !
This heat is affecting me more and more , with only 3 months of decent weather , its not worth it anymore.

When I was about twelve, my father finally sprung for a very large window fan in the kitchen. Always turned to exhaust. a window as open about 3 inches in each room. It did work pretty good at night so sleeping was not too bad but daytime it was useless as all it did was bring more hot inside.

Now in the winter, we always kept the windows open a few inches. I never slept better all through the winter. That cold air was refreshing and it felt like heaven getting between those sheets and blankets. I would do that today, but my wife would not stand for it.

Here in Suckatomato CA we have had way to many over 100s so far and many more to come the other day in the shade 107 10% humidity with a wind felt like a blast furnace stepping out the door, Rumors say we will be expecting 114 soon, Really glad to see I am not the only pansy here

Where I live our warmest day so far has been 85F with the average about 78F. The nights drop down to appx 58F. Not complaining about the nights as this is good for sleeping. Makes you want to pull the blankets up.

I knew this old timer years ago, WWII Navy vet. I think his hearing was ruined from guns on a naval ship. He had hearing aids in both ears and was always smiling. He said he always knew when people were talking in the room and barely heard them. He would smile at them, nod every now and then, and it was all good.

He said his wife would catch on from time to time and realize that when he was smiling too much in the company of others it was because he had them turned off and couldn't really hear anyone.

When life gives you lemons....
Peace and quiet has its own rewards.

Western PA.

No whole house AC even now. BUT...I updated my dad's piss poor attic fan system when I inherited the house. Now I have TWO mushroom fans to ventilate the attic, and all day they keep it from overheating the house (added 18 inches of blow in too), then I fixed his circa 1950 deep pitch slow speed fan in the ceiling of the hallway. At night I pop the hatch to it, open the windows, tie the dog to a leash and put heavy boots on the small children. I turn it on and watch the sides of the house pull in and dust goes up...cool evening air comes in. Small exaggeration, but only the boot part...

Funny how we change. As a kid, our houses and cars didn’t have a/c. I ran around all summer fishing, hunting, farming and chasing girls - never seemed to catch any. It would be in the high 90s to low 100s all summer. I often worked outside in the heat into my early 40s. I was in Phoenix and it was 116* in the shade. I just can’t take much of that anymore! Wife was the same way. She was upset with me the other day because I turned the A/C up to 78! I don’t think you can even buy a non-a/c car these days.

I don't see much mentioned in this thread about humidity but it is what can make heat bearable or miserable. It's 84% humidity where I am, near the coast of SC. I can take 100 degrees easy - I go to work before daylight and quit about 1pm. But, I can't take humidity over about 60% any time, any circumstances.

Was just down to lake Bull Shoals at MissourI - Arkansas line , hot and humid buddy. The grass would crackle under your feet. Water temperature was 91 and shade was your friend. Young deer had to have the fallen fruit from the pear tree.

A bunch of the guys i worked with in south Florida noticed that the weather reports never actually reported the real temperature. We never could not get anyone to admit it but came close back in the early 80s, they would report the temp lower at the request of the chamber of commerce. The chamber of commerce didn't want to scare off the tourist, so they never got close to the actual temp. several of us found a super accurate thermometer on a jobsite we were remodeling and never got the truth from the news.
