Avoiding Adjustable Cheek Rests

I've used the foam pipe insulation that has the self adhesive. Pull away the plastic strip that prevents the two halves from sticking together and depending how much you spread the two sticky halves you get different height adjustment. There are different sizes of foam for differently sized pipe. Very cheap. when you're done, and have removed the foam, use a little "goof off" to clean the adhesive from your stock. Works for me. Install a Warner Tool Co. adjustable cheek piece in the stock of choice & you'll also have the cast on/cast off option.
It's not rocket science to install.

Make the rifle fit you, not you fit the rifle!

I understand the value of the adjustable comb, but I have got to cut costs some way, some how. Was hoping I could do something on the adjustable cheek rest to help with that. Wanted to stay well below $1000 for a stock!

McMillan A-5 $548
Adjustable CheekRest $128
LimbSaver Pad $98
Pillar Bedding $220

Total $994

You may wish to occasionally check the McMillan 'Specials' page. If the Howa will fit the Rem 700 stocks, then you'll have a much better chance to find something. Savage, not so much, but here's one that I just saw (i.e. 10 seconds ago), after reading your post and going to look: #3428 ADJ HTG/TEX OLIVE, GRAY, BLACK MARBLE, SNIPER FILL, RH SAVAGE SHORT ACTION, CENTERFEED MODEL, FAC DBM, BOTTOM BOLT RELEASE, FAC MAG B/C, 1" DEC PAD, 13.5" LOP, CLAMPBAR C/P, 2 STUDS, ALUMINUM PILLARS INSTALLED. $650.00 11/27/13

Kick-Ez makes a stick on pad in 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4". I use them for my grandkids rifles and shot guns so that their stocks fit correctly. Shooting rifles off bench works great for them. 9 year old killed a 300 yd prairie dog and 13 year old killed one at 668. Bought mine through Midway-USA. Old Doug

Phil,
My guns are long range bencootingrest guns. I have a Shehane MBR, it has a large stock in the butt, great for prone shooting, may be all you need. I started shooting a steel match www.bangsteel.com . I needed a little more for the cheek. I added a strapon Triad Tac cheekrest http://www.triadtactical.com/Triad-Tactical-c-298/ . works great, and can be goes off and on.

On my hunting rifles I never put larger than a 44 objective, in most cases the stock is fine, and the rifle ends up half a pound lighter.

On my target rifles, I use adjustable cheeks, and on my McMillan A5 I use a Karsten saddle type, and on one of my muzzle loaders I use a removable neoprene sleeve with foam inserts because the comb was just too low. (designed for irons)

Thanks. I had not noticed the "specials" page and will watch this. My Savage action is a single shot action, so at the minimum need a blind mag stock (and mag opening filled with something), or a stock that has no mag opening at all.
