Automated neck turning setup

I didn't buy the mill to neck turn brass...just a nice side benefit.

No concentricity issues yet. I cannot detect any variation around the necks with a .0001" Mitutoyo tubing mic.

This isn't really about how long it takes, it is the fact that I can do something else while it is turning necks that made it appealing to me. Have I mentioned that I hate neck turning?

I like the idea of the through case holder!

That is the great thing about automation. While the machine is working you can use your time to do things that machines won't do, like talk to customers, plan processes, order supplies/materials, etc.

I'm in agreement with jlow here, at some point there's going to be trash buildup in those jaws and then there's gonna be 100 pcs of bad turned necks.
Also as for a tubing mic to read to .0001 that's not gonna happen on a consistent basis, you need an optical comparator to read consistently within those specs.

James, they got these new-fangled CMM things that beat them old comparators eight ways to Sunday. ;) [br]
And, they can be programmed, too.

This is true we have three of them here in our shop. Just seems for brass the comparator be much quicker.

There must be some limit to this insanity

For most, the limit is their wallet or what they can sneak past the wife 8)

I remember my old trap-shooting days. Everyone was looking for the best "trap gun", paying $2,000-$6000 for their shotguns. Believe that the recognized "Champ" at the time was walking away with all the prize money shooting an old "Windcutter" Model 12.

Seems like the same thing here in the world of "metalic cartridges".

If you hated turning necks that much, you could just pay me to do it for you.

I work for burgers and tator tots.

But after a few beers, I pee just about as much as that machine does. About the same color too. :o

As you get older like some of us, one other limit is the amount of stuff you are willing to put up with in the house. I don't buy stuff anymore unless it really makes a difference....

All,
Only 846,000 cases and you will have it paid for. I like it.

Oh good! Given the number of reloads I usually prep in one session and shoot weekly, I should have that baby paid for in around 28,100 reloading sessions. Hmmm...not sure I have that many sessions left before the Grim Reaper comes acallin.

Not really sure about the existence of the negativity in this thread. The original post was about a technology demonstration, not about the only way to turn case necks. Eric has done things with a rifle that most people could only ever dream about. If I had 1K necks to turn, and a VMC with idle time, I'd do the same thing.

I've got to admit I'm a bit surprised by the negativity too. The VMC has already paid for itself by making shooting accessories. Guess I'm supposed to let it sit idle while I stand there with drill and neck turner in hand? I never claimed it was a cost effective method of neck turning, I just thought it was a cool application of automating a repetitive task.

FYI for the Lapua brass load it and shoot it crowd...I wanted to see how much I was actually taking off in my neck turning operation so I measured the necks of maybe 4 or 5 pieces before turning them. Neck thicknesses varied by as much as .001" around the circumference of the neck on at least half the pieces I measured. That is why I turn necks. This is new blue-box Lapua brass. Don't know how the old paper box would do.
