Aurora Borealis tonight!

Started about 9:30 or so. Began as a pale green band of light directly over head. As we faced North, the first appearance was actually a little bit behind us, if straight up is 90 degrees the first appearance was about maybe 120 degrees. The it spread down towards the horizon. Still going on now.

More than just pretty lights in the sky:

...EXTREME GEOMAGNETIC CONDITIONS OBSERVED AND SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC
STORMS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND...

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has observed extreme (G5)
geomagnetic conditions Friday afternoon and expect severe (G4)
conditions to continue through the weekend.

* A Geomagnetic Storm of this strength can cause multiple and
widespread issues with various power and communication systems.

* Widespread voltage control problems may occur; some power grid
systems may experience component failures, disruption of service
and protective device trips. This could result in blackouts.

* Pipeline currents can reach hundreds of amps.

* GPS and other satellite navigation may be degraded or
unavailable for days.

* High Frequency (HF) radio propagation may be impossible in many
areas for one or two days.

* Low-frequency radio navigation can be out for hours.

* Aurora may be visible at much lower latitudes.

I had a feeling something was up yesterday when auto steer in the tractor couldn't hold a straight line.

Not sure why all the laughs in response to this. It really does mess with GPS function. During normal field work I typically till every other pass, then come back and till the other passes. This lets me get closer to the headland before raising the disc while turning around, and makes it unnecessary to gear down to turn. KIMG0509.JPGKIMG0529.JPG

When this suddenly decides it wants to drift several feet off course, I have to come back to the same pass to cover the little strip that got missed. If it becomes obvious that GPS is going to be absent for awhile, I go back to manual and take every pass back to back. A minor annoyance any other day, but definitely frustrating when the planter is only a couple rounds behind.

I hate that I didn't see this last night and hope to tonight. Pics on facebook from people in this area were pretty amazing, as are these. I saw a little bit of this when I was just a kid, maybe 8-10 years old. People didn't know what it was but it was nothing compared to this one. I remember, it looked a lot like the Windows (window pane) logo from here, back then. Surely a sign...a Windows program logo in the sky over southern Ky in the mid 1970's. Lol! Heard what it was on the late local news.
