At what pressure will gunpowder ignite????

I suppose Hearing as well as eye protection is in order then. Not common when tapping a brass rod with a hammer.
Deffinetly...The only thing the owner and I could think of is that his "TAP" was hard enough to push the powder onto the primer anvil and detonate it rupturing the case.

How about putting the upper in a freezer for at least a day and then trying to push it out from the muzzle. Brass and steel have different expand and shrink properties when subjected to extreme temps. The phrase "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey" come to mind. A brass monkey was a device made of brass with indentions used on old naval ships to stack cannon balls on. During periods of extreme cold, they would shrink enough to to cause the cannon balls to fall off the monkey, hence the term.
I would stand the upper breech end down into a 5 gal bucket surrounded by 10 pounds of ice or in a large cooler just bury the upper in ice and then see if I can tamp it out from the muzzle.

I my reloading life I have managed to get 3 cases stuck that I could not remove via a tapped case pulling setup. The worse, a dumbass move of not lubing every case when forming the 17 squirrel cartridge and it was one step from being sent to Redding. All three I was able to eventually free using freezer cooling and kroil soaking cycles.

Really no need for ‘O’ rings, as the grease seals the bore pretty good as it can’t be compressed.
Use the same method removing bearings/bushes and the like when there is no opening at the rear, the grease forces it way behind and pushes them out if heat doesn’t do the job first.

Cheers.
That is exactly the way you remove a pilot bushing or bearing from the center of the fly wheel

Here is the situation:

AR-15 / LIVE/LOADED 223 cartridge stuck in chamber / 52 g Sierra bullet / 24.5G Vit133 / Fed SR primer

My gunsmith tried to force it out from the muzzle with a brass rod as there is no way to grab the case from the breech. Using more force than he usually would, the case would not budge. When attempted to pry it out from the breech, the rim was ripped off the case.

He wants to use a press to force it out with a brass rod from the muzzle.

He is concerned that with a near zero air space in this cartridge, the bullet will be forced into the case, exerting pressure on the gunpowder. Too much pressure and the gunpowder will go off.

My question to the board, does anyone have any idea how much pressure it would take to set off smokeless powder under this circumstance?

I tried to call Hogdon but they are closed until 1/3

Any other ideas to get this cartridge out is appreciated. It has been standing on end with Kroil oil through the muzzle but it still will not budge with moderate force.
If you can close the bolt fire the round it will come out normal Ask me how I know

Why not get a buddy to hold the barrel pointed down range. Another can take a hammer & punch and set off the primer, sending the round down range. Then, remove the empty case???:oops::oops:

Well I wouldn't do that. I believe the brass case would leave the barrel before the bullet.

In my younger days I did a lot of crazy stuff lots of people believe if you throw ammo in a fire then bullets will go flying. Well the weak link is the brass case. If that brass case isn't supported by a gun chamber it is what explodes and goes flying. Ask me how I know.

The first question I have is how good is the barrel? The second is is it a "real shooter", a higher end like Krieger, Criterion, or even a Wilson?

If the answer to both was no and it is a $100 barrel from a no name AR barrel making company I would take it off and put a new one on because it's so easy to do. Then lean the problem barrel in a corner with the barrel filled with some great penitrating oil like Seafoam makes.

The last question is why not take the barrel out of the receiver so you can really get at the problem? It sounds like the problem has passed the "easy fix" stage.

I am missing something in all of this. OK live round in the chamber, gunsmith tried to force it out from muzzle end with a brass rod. With an attempt to pry the case out the case rim was ripped off. So at this point the case minus a case head should have had the powder fall out and the primer would have come out with the case head which was ripped off. At this point I no longer see a live round? The fact the case head ripped off tells me the bolt carrier group was locked to the rear.

Now if this much I have right wouldn't a broken shell extractor work? You have a case less the case head, the powder should have fallen out and a broken shell extractor should be worth a try. I would let a stuck case sit overnight after dousing it with a good penetrating oil and use a broken case extractor.

I don't understand how using grease or any pressure applied from the muzzle will do anything with a ripped off case head? What am I missing in all of this?

I think just the rim was ripped off, not the whole case head.

So I'm curious; is it resolved yet? What method was used?
