Astigmatism

I didn't want to hijack the shooting glasses thread so I thought I would just start a new one.
I can no longer use iron sights on handguns or leveraction rifles I have no problem with scopes.
I've tried many Red dot type sights Holosun, FF3, DPP all I see is either a star burst or more like a figure eight.
I do have some C more slide rides and I can see almost a perfect dot.
There great sights for action pistol but not the best for carry or hunting.
I've tried to explain this to my optometrist but there not shooters and I don't think they get the issue im having.
What do you do for your astigmatism.

I have this condition and it was corrected with corrective lens.

The condition you described could be due to another eye problem, but I would assume your optometrist checks for those conditions. For example, about 15 years ago I had a condition called cornea dystrophy. It exhibited the symptoms similar to what you are describing. I was referred to a specialist who performed a debridement of both corneas which corrected the condition.

Maybe get a second opinion.

I have to wear contacts hunting or pistol shooting because of astigmatism.

I took the risk and had Lasik surgery about 5 years ago. Wore glasses for 45 years before that.

I'm VERY satisfied.

Edit to add - my astigmatism was quite bad. 20-300 in one eye. 20-500 in the other.
I tried contact lenses twice. Couldn't get used to them. They had to be hard lenses because of the severity of my astigmatism.
Felt like I had something in my eye constantly. I couldn't stand them.

Not trying to sell anyone on anything. Just relating my experience.

I'm lucky. My optometrist was a shooter and knew his stuff. When I started having trouble with iron sights he made me his last appointment for the day and I took in a high standard victor. Looked at the sights while he adjusted the lenses and got me dialed in. Maybe you could work something out with yours. Actually showing him might make things easier.

It sounds like you also have cataracts issues.
IF you are also battling cataracts, educate yourself on toric lens implants. The good news is that the toric lens can correct your far-distance astigmatism, and usually require no far-distance glasses. The bad news is that toric lens replacements are an additional 2000+ dollars each over the cost of conventional lens replacements.....and regular bifocals will probably be needed for close-vision correction.

Have have astigmatism in both eyes but that is corrected by contact lenses. Just need to use glasses for reading. Works well for me.

Glass lens shouls have the prescription ground on the inside. The side towards your eye.
Avoid plastic lens.

For handgun, iron sights, the focus needs to be adjusted on the front sight, for old eyes.

When we were young, the eye could change focus from target to front sight ,back and forth, so quick, we never noticed.

Old age, focus iis mostly stuck. I am on a tablet to much. When i turn on the tv, its not clear. Eyes take a while to adjust.

My now-retired eye doc was a competitive pistol shooter. I had astigmatism and was near-sighted. He said he'd be happy to prescribe shooting glasses that would allow me to focus on the front sight. But he also said that's not optimal. The problem with a sharp front sight is the target is too blurry. Better, he said, is to place the focus 1 or 2 feet beyond the front sight. Then the sights are clear enough and the target is clear enough. Although he said he'd make glasses for me, he suggested I try my computer glasses which do just as he described. Voila! The computer glasses worked great. They corrected for my astigmatism and focused just right.

Fast forward. In the last few weeks I've had cataract surgery on both eyeballs. I got the pricey Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses. I'm still healing, but so far they do what's advertised. My astigmatism and near-sightedness are corrected. Amazingly, I can focus on the rear sight, front sight and target all at once. That's perplexing. I understand how you look through different parts of bifocal glasses for different distances, but how does it work with the lens stuck to your eyeball? Doc said the brain adapts and sure enough, my brain is adapting.
