What a Day. I hardly know where to begin.
The 1500 on Rocky Top
Got a text from James Phillips, aka 22 Dasher,
aka James in Tenn,
last night about when I would be off again.
I responded "Tuesday and bring the BAT 300 Win Mag".
He said he would be over after noon which was perfect.
He said his zero with the 40 MOA base
and Barrett 10 / 40 rings was going to be somewhere
around 1400 yards (low as he could get).
We set up on top of ROCKY TOP and he took his first
shot into the big field at 1600 yards. Saw the impact
and we are good to go.
1500 yard 18 inch plate was next on the agenda.
James took a couple of shots and was close.
Then I took a sighter and was a little high and left
as the wind was pushing left slightly, 3 MOA.
I dialed it in and the 284 barked and the second shot
was on its way. Solid hit 2 in below center orange bull.
I stood up, threw my ear muffs on the ground and began
my MOON WALK, giving high fives to James and Shayne.
I said I'm done. And I was. What a rush. 2 shots and a center mass hit.
Viper SS, 284 Win., 9 twist Brux No Taper, 180 gr Berger Hybrids,
NF ACTAR 5-25 x 56.

James took a few more shots with the 208's and
decided to pull a fresh box of 230's out of the truck.
While he was revamping I told Shayne Halliburton to set up with the
284. On his 4 th or 5 th shot the Wicked Witch was dead.
Center hit. DING... The ding was clearly audible from 1500 yds.

James shot a few of the 230's and scored a solid hit with the
Bat 300 win mag.
Bat, 1.350 straight Krieger, MBR, NF BR 12 - 42,
Barrett EX 15 / 40 adjustable moa Rings setting on a Bat 50 MOA rail.
I told James to crawl under the 284 and I gave him 3 shells
and told him I had to save the rest for the 1 mile shot.
His first two were close and he hit solid on the third
shot. I told him to shoot the 284 until he missed.
He followed up with another hit. He hit two consecutive hits
with the 284 win.
We made 5 hits on the plate with 2 guns and 3 different shooters.

I asked if they were ready to go to ONE MILE and they said let's go.
We loaded up and moved to the back porch range.
The 1800 yd
We had to move two benches up on the hillside where we have been
clearing cedars. We got set up and took aim at qualifying for the 1800
yard club. I had never shot past 1760 (one Mile) before.
James had shot to 2 K but that was with a 50 CAL.
The little pile of bones that I set up Monday was shining like new money.
It was cow bone white and the size of a hat.
James took first shots and we could see the hits easily.
Then I took a few and on my seventh shot bone fragments flew like
busting an egg. Another MOON WALK and I said I'm done.

Now James goes after it diligently with the 230's only stoping to let the big
1.350 in. barrel cool. After a few more shots james vaporizes
a bone and all we see is a white puff like an egg vaporizing.
Now only Shayne remains to break the 1800 yd barrier.
James has Shayne take over the 300 after it cools a while.
Shayne is all over the bones but no hit.
Now Shayne is down to the last round. He lets it fly
and The CELEBRATION began. A bone took flight like a
prarie dog after being hit by one of
Voldoc's 87 gr V-Max.
Well I am afraid the smile is permanently afixed to Shaynes face.
Within a 90 minute time frame he qualified 1500 and 1800
with 2 different guns.

James was a little excited himself. He wanted to got to the
bone site and take pics of the divots around the bones.
It is about a 30 minute gator ride plus walk to the 1800 yd
line. Shayne had knocked a ball joint at least 15 yards back up the hill.
Next installment will be the 2 K shot. I have the spot picked out.
Viper SS 284 win, NF ACTAR

Today was what memories are made of with good friends to
share it with.
Good friends, good guns, BEST of TIMES!!
