Arizona Service Rifle and Long Range Championships

The Arizona Service Rifle State Championship will be held January 16 - 18 with a 3x600,any rifle, service rifle, F-Class) on Friday, the 80 shot championship course on Saturday and a leg match on Sunday. In addition, there will be XC practice on Wednesday the 14th and 600 practice on Thursday the 15.

The Arizona Long Range Championship will be held February 6 - 8 with a Palma match on Friday, 40 shots Any Rifle, Any Sight and a 4 man team match on Saturday and 40 shots Any Rifle Iron Sights on Sunday. There wll be 1000 yard practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday preceding the match and there will be a Palma and a 3x1000 on Jan. 31, Feb 1,the preceding weekend) so there's more than enough LR shooting there to make anyone happy.

Programs and entry forms for both matches are available at www.desertsharpshooters.com and we appreciate advance entries. If you're uncertain of attendance, please send in your form and then pay on site. If you're too late to mail it, at least fill it in and bring it with you, that's a real time saver for us. The matches are at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, right off I-17 at Exit 223. Hope to see a lot of forum members there!

Is it correct that on Sunday that there will not be an F-Class match?

Ted, Sunday of the Long-Range Championship includes F-Class. There is no F-Class during the Service Rifle Championship,yesterday and today) because it is across the course shooting, but every day of the Long-Range will include F-Class as will the preceding weekend and training days in between.

Mike, it's the state association policy that there is no aggregate award when more than one rifle is allowed in a match,such as allowing an any sight rifle in one stage). That's why you also don't see an aggregate in the 1000 yard day preceding the Palma Championship in December. However, the results listing just happens to be in aggregate order ;^) I would change it, but there are forces greater than nature at work here...

The weather couldn't have been any nicer all week - except Sunday which I'll admit was a day to test one's mettle. Thanks for being so accommodating in setting me and Brenda up on the same pit rotation. This is very helpful for "shooting couples" sharing the same vehicle. We will be back to shoot more matches. The 8 hour drive from CA was not that bad.

Brenda and I enjoyed hanging out with and shooting against the F-Class Team. As always, we have learned from the experience.

280man & German, were Nancy & MId shooting again or were they just helping out with the running of things for the rest of you?

After their terrible ordeal coming back from Perry last year, we're all hoping their rehab & return to the line is going smoothly!

Steve, not only were they shooting, but Nancy won the match with a 600-36X,we had to scrub the last string due to a sudden hail storm). Mid shot well but skipped shooting on Sunday due to the admin. work on the results.
Bud Solis shot an iron sight 200-15X for new Senior and Police national records,iron sights) pending NRA certification.

Congrats to Bud on breaking my 200-14X record. I had a brief opportunity to meet Bud at Perry with many other fine shooters a couple of years ago. I know of Bud's fine reputation, marksmanship and dedication to the sport. Bud has been an inspiration to me and many others in this game. Long live the new Sr. record -- but there is still 5Xs of room at the top for the taking --I will be training hard!

Congrats again to a fine Rifleman and the new Sr. record holder. Tell Bud I will buy him a fine dinner at Perry this year in celebration of yet another accomplishment.

Congratulations also goes out to F-Open match winner Jim Murphy! We will have to wait on official word from the NRA but I believe he also bested his own National Senior record with an outstanding 200-10X. John Brewer also set a new Grand Senior record with a smoking 199-7X. Great shooting guys keep it up you all are setting the bar awfully high for us newbies to ever catch up but we are going to keep trying.

My congratulations to fellow old timer and Grand Senior John Brewer for unseating me at 1000 yards. His 199-7x trumped my 197-7x G.S. record set last May during the regional F-Class Shootout at Tullahoma. That's a huge point difference for guys our age!

It sure hurts none at all to take a bow to a better shooter, does it?

John sure made a much more definitive statement than I was able to do. I always felt that my first winning of the 1000y F award with a 195-5 in September 2007, then bumping it up to only 197-6 in May 2008, and then once more in May 2008 to 197-7 were pretty wimpy efforts. Was humbly surprised to stay on the board for 17 months.

I know what you mean. I get to shoot very little. In the last 5 matches I have set one NRA 600 prone record and broke Mid's Sr. 1000 yd record with irons. I never thought much about the 600 record at all,it lasted about 30 days) and have shot much better many times. As to Mid's record,200-12X) that I broke with a 200-14X, except for the 105 degree conditions that almost killed me, it was actually an easy run and would have been much better if I could have managed the heat a little better.

I did not "sit" on the record but I let the record "sit" on me. I have so many work and family obligations -- not to mention the economy -- that 2008 was mainly restricted to nightly dry firing sessions in my basement and occasional 200 yd prone sessions at the local range.

Mid's record lasted from I believe 1999 -- about 10 years. My record only lasted 9 months. I know your competitive spirit, and these record breakings are the best thing that could have happened to us. I know I am motivated more than ever to handle my obligations and find the time to smell the roses,shoot matches) while my eyes are still working.

I look forward to seeing your hammering 6BRX do its thing again at Oak Ridge and Butner F-Class matches. I hope I can hold up my end. We have to get our records back -- and a few more as well.
