Are these realistic 30-06 #s?

Have been reading a lot about long-range loads for the 30-06 and have seen results of 2900 fps using a 190gr bullet and 2800 fps using a 200/210gr bullet. Even with todays powders and 28-30" barrels are these realistic results?

I don't think so. I get 2800 with Sierra 190's (moly) and H4350, about 100 fps less with H4831sc. All loads are pressure tested and very close to maximum allowable pressure. By the way, a 190 Sierra or Berger 190 VLD at 2780 to 2800 is a great 1000 yard load.

German's results match my mine with .30-'06 and Sierra 190 MK. You can get more velocity from double base powders at the expense of temperature sensitivity. If you want better 1000 yard ballistic performance, experiment with some of Berger's new caliber .30 Hybrids. They are available at 185, 200, 215 and 230 grains. Most .30-'06 rifles have 10" twists and can easily handle the heaviest of these bullets. I use the 230 in .308 at less velocity than an '06 can achieve and with excellent 1000 yards results. My loads also use H4350.

My current loads I have right now. 185 VLD hunting, H4350 getting 2820avg fps with 24" barrel. Also using Ramshot Hunter with 208 amax at 2710fps.

The 185 seem to do well out to 1K. Haven't tested the 208's yet to 1k.

Info from someone who saw your post (not me, posted for him who is banned):

"190 grain Sierra MatchKings pushed by 60+ grains of RE22 in Lapua brass using Fed 215 primers in a 10 twist Hart barrel 30 inches long will exceed 2900 fps without any moly coating. Best accuracy was at 2835 fps. 60 grains is considered a top load so take the normal precautions and work up to it."

I'm fairly new to reloading, but have been working diligently with my 1951 Winchester Model 70 24" barrel.

Those numbers seem overly optimistic. I loaded Sierra GK 180 to 2884 fps but the primers were cratered and the group size was 1.5 MOA at best.

I now load 56.5 gr H4350 behind a Speer 180 SPBT .028" off the lands at 2768 fps and get .7 MOA

I'm about right where the Hornady reloading manual says I'll be. My 26" barrel gets a bit more speed than the manual's expected velocity, my 22" barrels get a bit less.
With those bullet weights, (per loads I've developed,) I'll just get to the 1000 yard mark before going transonic.

I can safely reach 2,800 fps with no pressure signs and excellent accuracy in a 30" 308 running the Berger 185 Hybrid.

I'll be doing so this very weekend for 88 rounds @ 600 yards.

With the greater capacity the 30-06 provides and the right combination of twist, bullet and powder, I don't see why a 190 can't be run a little faster, 2,800 for a 200 - 210... but do you really need to run them that fast to shoot good scores?

The 200's shoot awful well right at 2600. I agree with the concept that velocity in't necessary to get good results. The bullets will get there just fine with a more moderate load.

Trust me, I just won an F-TR match at 1k with 215 Berger hybrids rolling out at 2525 fps. I didn't think that the reduced wind drift justified the headache I had after the match, but that is just me.
