Are Savage Single shot target actions any good

I shoot a Savage right now. I made High Master with it.
Would I buy another one? NO!
The action is accurate enough. Truing will help it a little bit. But all they really need is a PTG bolt head that has been lapped to the action. Reset the headspace after lapping.
The trigger is the downfall and aftermarket alternatives are just not out there.
The trigger is this Mickey mouse stamped sheet metal affair that releases the firing pin on the side of the bolt. Damn hard to come up with a safe alternative in the weights we want them.

Rifle Basix Sav2 trigger will make you change your mind. I shoot .25's and LESS at 100 yards.

mine shoots pretty good. Fred time and true, benchrest trigger, benchrest stock and bedding.

I have a Savage palma in 6 Dasher that shoots pretty good with a Brux Barrel .2s all day long even when I don't do My Part lol

I am thinking about buying a brand new Savage Target action. It is one of those single shot Right port right bolt large shank with the accutriger 6oz. Are the any good Or do you still need to true them up. Or should I just do another Rem. 700 and the have it trued. Any experience would be great.

JARD also makes a trigger for Savage rifles. Mine breaks at 6 ounces.

Interesting, seeing as they don't advertise anything rated under 16 oz...

JARD has two different pull weights for the Savage. I bought the lighter pull weight and it breaks at less pull than they said. Maybe I was lucky - or maybe it was due to my running a Dremel buffing wheel over the trigger and sear before I installed it.

Then again those two listings are so close together that they really make no sense

Try calling JARD. I actually had a second JARD trigger on a 6XC that I recently sold. Both triggers had lower pull weights than what they said. I can't remember exactly, but I think the lower pull weight was either 8 or 10 ounces. In any case, I had no problem getting pull weight down around 6 ounces.
You do have to remove a little wood for the JARD to fit as it is a little wider and longer than the original Accu-trigger.
You could also PM Topwater and ask him how he likes the JARD - he bought my 6XC.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use a Savage target action for a varmint gun. For ultra competitive precision shooting, other options are more likely to put someone in the winner’s circle.

Ok, I know this is an old thread, but bear with me. I have read that there are better years for the Savage 'target' action. right bolt, left port. Can you guys give me your opinion on best years, specific models? I know there are many issues vs. a higher end build. But I am seeing if I can put together an accurate rifle on the cheap side. Probably use a 6.5 or 257 caliber.

Unless things have changed, they are the same action. My dad has one from when they first came out and it's exceptionally accurate. When he bought it, I was shooting airgun and smallbore at a high level. I couldn't get past the trigger but could still lay down good groups at short range. Wind is still the name of my existence at long range.

If you buy a Remington and re-work it to make it the way it SHOULD be, you are now on the heels of a custom action, $$$-wise. If you buy a Savage, you can make it what you want, except for the triggers. If you are limited in funds, you have 2 REAL choices: 1.) buy a good used competition rifle. This will give you a GREAT foundation to work with; or 2.) Buy a Savage and you will have a VERY competitive rifle. However, at some point, if you continue in competition(s), you WILL buy a full-blown custom. That is why I would prefer to buy a really good used competition rifle. You will have to spend A LITTLE MORE than going the Savage route, however, once you have the foundation of a custom rifle, barrels is about all you need to change from there on out. In the L-O-N-G run, since you will eventually buy a full blown custom anyhow, I think it would actually be cheaper to start out with a good used custom. There are some really good deals out there if you look for them.

Some of you are responding to 6 yr old posts in this thread.

As far as I know Savage hasn’t updated the FTR rifle in the last decade and it is still running a 1:12, which kind of limits you to 185s. I think they should update it with a 1:10 with the freebore for 200s and it would be an off the shelf competitive rifle. Hell, Weatherby has been throating for them since forever.

I have a 223 mid range FTR rifle built on an old Savage target action. I shoots well.

I started in FClass FTR with a Savage 10. I got the trigger to adjust down to 16 oz. upgraded the barrel and buttstock. This is not the Savage 12 FTR. But, I was determined to make high master with this rig and it took me 3 years. Saying all that to say this. I just upgraded to a full custom because I figured I got everything from that Savage. My first match was an improvement to another level which is what I was hoping. Start with a Savage but you will end up with a custom. That’s why they cost more.

I use one, well actually two and a Rem. Put a good barrel on it and you can compete. You know a Krieger etc. As for the trigger, don't expect it to go down to 6 oz. and be safe, more like 10 to 12. Still good enough for most. My Rem shoot good, but one of my Savages shoots better, the other one, not so much. Just goes to show you, sometimes your the bug and sometimes the windshield.
