Are headspace gauges hardened?

Depending on what cartridge you are dealing with, the gage you desire may already exist. I have seen gage sets for 308 winchester that included gages in .002 increments. Ask your gage manufacturer

I just screw the action on with a go gage in the chamber and a dial indicator set up at the back of the striped bolt. I don’t even buy no go gages.

I dont have no-go's either. The purpose of this is to make it fast and easy. Setting up dials and shims and the sort doesn't help that.

I just checked 3 old headspace gages I don’t care about. A file just barely tries to cut them. So yes they’re hardened but not glass, carbide should get it done.

If you only owned a lathe and had a piece of 12L14, you could make one. Not hardened but hell, half of the barrel nutters use a fired piece of brass to set headspace.

Here are my 30BR/6BR and PPC headspace gages that I made out of grade 8 bolt years ago.
They are not near as sloppy in a chamber as Factory gages.

I set all of my chamber’s head spacing with the simple tools shown here.

I made an adjustable gauge for a wildcat I made a while back. Just set overall with a feeler gauge. I think I just used 12L14.
