ARCA / Tripod Questions

Recently upgraded to a CF tripod with the intent to forego bringing a bipod, adding ARCA plates on hunting rifles, and using the tripod for glassing and holding the rifle for western backpack hunts.

It appears there a good number of quality plate manufacturers. Does anyone have recommendations on one or the other that have difference features that others may not?

Secondly, is with respect to mounting to the rifle. On my main rifle, the stock is a McM Game Hunter, which has 3" spacing on the two front sling stud holes. Do you use these for the arca plate or do you drill new holes closer to the mag well as to balance the gun better? Do you find that this affects being able to get the gun out of a frame pack (snagging)?

Pictures would be helpful. TIA!

I used plate nuts for the ARCA rail. The rails are all basically the same dimensions. It just depends on if you want a full length rail or a short one close to the mag well. The clamps for the Tripod are what differs in quality and price. Sawtooth Rifles make a nice full length plate. RRS has the upper end ball heads and leveling heads. On my P. dog gun, I just have a cheap Amazon rail section. Works great.

My current favorite Arca plate is the Area 419.

It's a lower profile, so it's not as obnoxious to hold offhand as others can be.

I used the rear sling stud on the Manners on the right, & only drilled one more hole to mount it.

The left one, I used the front action screw on the rear, and drilled another hole for the front. Balance is perfect with this setup.

I prefer to balance them if possible, and the further back the better IMO. Out further works, it just takes more tension to hold the gun in place. When balanced, you can run less tension, & can move the gun up, down, all around, & not have to fiddle with tension, especially nice at night with thermals.

The Area 419 plate comes with two T-nuts and screws for mounting in stocks. You need to order M-loks if mounting on AR hand guards.

That's very helpful. Your tripod responses on that other thread cost me some $$ :p

My arca set up is a older bog pod, 46mm ball head, 3" plate, both off amazon.
Mounted to rear slots on chassis.
Works like a charm.

Get the Area 419. They make a number of lengths that are all universal fit.

I was worried about that, but after checking this gun it's actually right on the front stud mounts with the suppressor. 26" barrel though
I run a 26" barrel with a Nomad Ti can and my balance point is about 3" forward of the mag well, no rifle I own will balance from the sling stud mounts, you might want to double check that.

I didn't like the idea of having a large rail on the bottom of my stocks. I went this route which was pretty cheap and easy and have no complaints. I mount the rail just forward of the mag well and the Arca adapter just clamps on. Works great, with easy removal and the small rail stays out of the way. It's far enough back I can still shoulder the rifle without it being under my forward hand and its not in the way when shooting off a bench.
