AR10 XTC barrel contour

I am collecting parts to put an 6.5CM AR-10 style XTC rifle together. I am looking for experienced input on barrel length and diameters to contour a blank to as well as the recommended chamfer angle on the chamber to facilitate reliably feeding.

I doubt this something that Jim would share since he has invested time and energy in learning how to make a very successful match rifle. White Oak is entitled to protect the lessons they have learned. I have no intention of going commercial with anything I learn, at 67 I have more time than any other resource to put a rifle together.

The space guns I have shot (both AR-15 and AR-10) have been somewhat muzzle heavy for the most part. The AR-10 that I shot was a friends and as I recall, his barrel was 26" with a 4" bloop tube. I believe the barrel was 1.000-1.200" under the handguard and I believe it was .875" from the gas block forward. It was chambered in 260 and was way too muzzle heavy due to the lack of counter balance weights on the stock. The rifle was accurate enough, but was difficult to shoot standing. If I were building one, I would go with a 26-28" barrel and have it fluted under the handguard to try and shave some weight off the front end. I like the upper received thread area to be the balance point, so I would play with weights until I got it to that point.

Most space guns are muzzle heavy, but most dont have over a 24" barrel and shooters use a houle or bloop tube to extend sight radius without adding more forward weight. Be warned, that the longer your barrel/bloop tube is, the more it will catch the wind in offhand on a windy day and get pushed around. I have seen where people had two tubes, one short for the short line which was no longer than the muzzle, and an actual extension for prone. This however requires you to have two front sight bases and increases your costs. My space gun is just a 24" barrel, no tube. I have not found the need for a bloop tube on it. The barrel is also .936 forward of the handguard and 1.050 under the handguard to the extension. To counteract the muzzle heavy barrel, I made a 3lb steel weight to fit on the tube of my skeleton stock, which gives me the butt heavy balance I prefer.
As far as the rear chamfer on the barrel, on my .223 barrels I use a 60* chamfer extending about 1/4" in diameter larger than the rear of the chamber. Im not familiar with the round you are useing though and can not comment on it.

Thanks for the information. This will be the first .308 platform AR style rifle I have worked with.
I am very appreciative of the insight and information that this forum provides.

Thanks,
