AR Sylvan Arms Gen 3 Folder misfires

I installed a Gen 3 folder on a 300 AAC rifle. I took it to the range today and was getting misfires about every 5-6 rounds. I had to rerack the slide and was able to fire the round. For those who have installed a folder, is this an issue that is common? Is there anything on the rifle I need to check to make sure the round is going into battery and the firing pin is getting full contact? Thanks.

Yes, I have installed this folder on a 223 Wylde and had no misfires, everything functioned as normal and without the folder.

Most likely the reliability or 5-6 rounds will change to more often or less often the more you shoot. Cleaning is a good thing and easy to do. If I was to get another misfire I would probably check to see if the bolt is in battery. The bolt extension they provide could be causing all or part of the issue. It adds weight and length and if your AR is on the edge of misbehaving for any number of reason, the extension could have put a function into being cranky. I doubt it, but it would go on my suspect list. After a good cleaning and function test for any other apparent issues reveals no suspect and you still get the misfires, I would take the folder off and test the gun. But, I'm sure you already have these plans and are just confirming if any others have had the same issue. Good Luck and I hope you report back.

BTW: I removed the folder from my test gun, just didn't like how the whole thing worked. Hope you like it better and it satisfies your needs.

Thanks Eagle Six. I installed this to keep it as my truck gun and it HAS to perform. I will take your advice. Before installed, it ran without issue.

The folders can be a problem with 300 BLK because of the added spacer weight with subsonic ammo. Shouldn’t be a problem with supers.

Weigh the spacer, reduce the buffer weight accordingly.

The other problem is when people have gone to lightened springs. They will eject fine, but not have the power to push more mass that might be creating more friction or binding. Can’t push the bolt and carrier into battery.

I am shooting supersonic ammo and it has a standard spring.

This is why you have a forward assist;) It might help figure out what’s going on.

If it was short stroking I would expect feeding issues, then a lighter buffer might help. Probably wouldn’t hurt to match buffer and adapter weight to why you had before. H2 for pistol gas, drop to a standard weight buffer.

If you already are using a standard carbine buffer, 3 Oz, normal carbine gas, might be some other issues, but it worked before, it’s either binding, too much weight.

It may still be short stroking a bit since if you pull the charging handle all the way back, it works. A bit more force on the carrier. Something possibly binding in the folder. The check would be when it misfires, push the forward assist, check the carrier movement through the ejection port.

You can make this happen by riding the charging handle all the way down until it stops, if there is any bind, it will stop out of battery. Note the position, snap it closed with the assist.

A good clean and lube sure won’t hurt.

I looked on their website to find the adapter weight, found this in the product information. Your not the first person to have problems with certain carriers, and the seem to have a work around.

Just a quick update. Installed the new folder with Sylvan providing what they think I did wrong in installation. Corrected that and the thing runs like a champ. I have an upper in 5.56 that a buddy turned the barrel for from a leftover blank he had. I am quite satisfied.

What was it that they think you did wrong during installation?
I needed to screw their extension in one more turn. It was just enough to get light primer strikes. I stripped it out removing it because the plate was stuck. They sent me a replacement at no cost. Outstanding service.

Assembly error, got it.

Unless it's a dire emergency, I never do plumbing on a Friday, weekend, or Holiday. Getting a professional on those days is almost impossible and usually the already high rates sky rocket. That's how confident I am of my plumbing skills!!! So, I know exactly what you mean.
