AR replacement trigger advice

Can anyone point me in the direction of the most economical upgrade trigger for better precision shooting? I have a 16" DPMS 5.56/223 and the trigger on it is HORRIBLE. Gritty, feels like it has 4 stages of pull, not consistent, and HEAVY.

Being a 16" carbine length what trigger should I be looking at that will not break the bank(under $200)

You cannot go wrong with a Rock River National Match 2 stage trigger. It's a crisp 4.5lb pull. In the past few weeks I have seen them for about $125...give or take a few bucks.

Good Luck...Jon

For the money, a RR two stage is about as good as it gets. Have had several ( like 5+) and they work well; if stoned gently and lubed with a moly grease they are very smooth.

savage,
as the others have said..RR 2 stage is a fine choice, I went distinguished on an Armalite 2 stage. with that being said I think the "tactical" geissele models might be up your alley. I currently run their adjustable 2 stagers in a couple of match guns. I can honestly say that they are the nicest triggers I have shot in an AR Platform. I would also say that jewels are nice too. they break often but are easy to fix...and might be a little easier on the wallet. I hope this helps some...please post what your decision was and why.
Holiday cheers,
Doc

Which model you have?

I am just curious if it is worth spending the extra $ to get a top end Geissele or not. This isn't a match rifle(yet) but still want it to shoot to my handloads potential. The current trigger won't allow me to do this

I have the ssa-e and the high speed match...the ssa-e is not adjustable but imo a great drop in replacement for the mil-spec...you will be impressed.

Geissele is the best I've used. Jard single stage 1.5# adjustable will give you a lighter pull but can be a pain to adjust and I've had two that I just could not get to work at all. RRA 2 stage is good and reliable. I just bought an ALG ( has some affiliation with Geissele) ACT model that is a reworked mil spec that is cleaned up and coated with some of those fancy new slick coatings. It is far and away better than a stock trigger and for $50-$70 a pretty cheap alternative and worth a look if the others are too pricy.

+1 on this post. Stay away from the Jards, had one & adjusting it was an exercise in futility. I have the Timney and two Geislees. No comparison with the previous two.

With your budget, get a Rock River 2 stage. Miles above a Mil spec trigger.
If you can do a little polishing that will make it a little better.
If you can do a little smith work( or have a smith do it), tweek the first stage spring, change the second stage spring and drill and tap the safety and put a set screw through it for an overtravel adjustment.
You can also put a drop of epoxy on the bottom of the safety and file it down for an overtravel.

I have a Geisslee ??? match and my tuned RRA triggers are very comparable.

I have the hi-speed national match- Service rifle models. Their sight says $279.00 and Bill is a gentleman to deal with. this might be a bit overkill for your blasting gun but buy once.....
cheers,
doc

Or you could drop in a chip mcormick trigger for 169.00 or do it really nice with a jewel,I have 4 or 5 of them and they look hard to install, but not really. You can easily go around a pound and have it function perfectly.

I decided to go with Giessele just because this is not a dedicated precision AR. It is a fun gun and also keep just in case needed in a defense situation. But since I shoot LR competition and reload, figured try to make this little AR shoot the best it can.

The SSA E seems to provide what I am looking for without as likely chance of a trigger safety issue.

Trigger came in the mail today. Installed it in about 20 minutes (never worked on my AR) and it is very nice. Looking forward to shooting this gun now :)

+1 on the Geissele but may be tough to find for less than 200. its worth spending the extra couple of bucks IMHO.

got the SSA E in the mail today and installed it in my rifle. Took me only 20 minutes(should have taken less but had never taken my rifle apart)

I am really liking how this trigger feels. Can't wait to go shoot the rifle now. Very noticeable 1st stage and second stage is smooth. No more fighting my factory DPMS trigger ;)
