AR-Comp vs Varget

I have an 8lb jug on the way, but it will be a while before I can get out to do much load testing in 223, 6br, or 308. I was bordering on whether to order RL-15 or more Varget, so I took a leap of faith and went with the AR comp.

I think you'll like it. I'm definitely replacing Varget with it. Lower SDs, meters better and has better temperature stability.

I've been testing it with the 190 SMK in my 308. 40.7 gr. gives me the same velocity as my goto 42.9 gr. Varget load. AR Comp gives less vertical deviation though. I'm getting lower SD with it than with Varget across the board, in my 303 Brit as well.

What's your velocity?

2530 fps. in 308 Win

I loaded it into some .223 Rem this weekend and the velocities were substantially lower than what Alliant lists. 2622 fps for 22.1 gr. with a 77 SMK and 2824 fps. for 23.2 gr. with a 70 VLD out of my 24" barrel.

What length barrel is the .308? Twist?

does anyone know what a max load would be with ar-com and the 185s?i went up to 41.0 today did not seem to see any just wondering how for up some of you other guys might have gone and what kind of fps you were getting?

i am using a pierce action and a 30 inch krieger forgot the chrono today :(

The AR Comp load was only tested in my 22" Broughton 5C 1-10" Twist barrel. The Varget load that gives the same velocity in that barrels gives:

2560 fps. in my 26" Bartlein 1-11.25" Twist
2500 fps in my 26" Rock 5R 1-10" Twist
2530 fps in my 27" Bartlein 1-10" Twist (0.3075/0.298 Palma bore)

I would expect similar results from AR Comp in the other barrels.

Just picked up a pound of ar comp to test in my 6br but didnt find any data for 6br and 107 smk. Anyone got starting place? And primer choice? thanks

Use Varget load data and start about 1 grain below the minimum.

I agree, 29 grs. would probably be fine, you may want to start at 28.5 to be safe, but I can shoot 28.4 in the 6 RAT which only has a water capacity of 37 grs. Dave

Good Morning,

I've been wanting to try the new AR-Comp powder in my 223. I've done a lot of searching, but I can't find any data on how it compares to a similar load of Varget.

I know that I can always back off my Varget load, and then work my way up. But, I was wondering if anyone had done any load development with the new powder to possibly save me a little time and powder to get me started.

Thanks in advance for any help, Ken
shot some today 22.1 =2660 22.3 = 2690...…….. 77 TMK...….450's

I’ve used ar-comp for a couple years now. My 223 load is 25 grains of varget or 24 grains of ar-comp for a 75 grain Hornady bthp. Definitely a little faster burning than varget, more like H4895. My 308 reflects the same results. A great powder that I use in my 243 also with the lighter bullets. That data is for a bolt gun, would drop it a little for a gas gun. Definitely worth a try. Good luck with your load testing.

AR-Comp seems to be treated like a red-headed step child, but it really is a great powder. Seems to be pretty insensitive to temp changes and I've been getting outstanding accuracy out of a 5.56 service rifle @22.7gr and a Sierra 80.

I love arcomp I’m my 308 rock river. It shoots great. I’m waiting on some more 175smk to get here in the mail. But my semi stack rounds up well
