AR Buttpad Screw Size

I have a Rock River AR and want to remove the rear sling stud. I want to use a nut to secure the lower buttstock screw however I don’t know the size I need. Anyone know the correct size? I went to our local hardware store and they didn’t have a nut to fit it.

Thanks

KNS makes a replacement that eliminates the loop with a sling stud. They might make a filler, too. Most people just cut the sling loop and grind to shape.

I am not sure what a Rock River AR is. Did Rock River make your buttpad? I have a couple different types and think most are Magpul, which I have one in front of me. There are 2 SHCSs holding the rubber piece onto the rear of the stock. Because there are only about a gazillion AR parts companies, it may help to post a picture. You could have an entirely different stock than akajun has, or that Fast4riot does or even me.

Its an A2 butt stock

Attached is a picture (fuzzy) of the sling swivel and buttpad bolt that secures it. Trying to find a nut that will fit the bolt.AR bolt.jpg

Every A1 and A2 stock is the same no matter what brand. Rock river is one of the most popular AR rifles there is. Magpul does not make this kind of stock

I went through looking for nuts too. Don't recall what size, but couldn't find them. Ended up grinding the sling loops off to fit so the stocks would ride on bags (as others above suggested).

Leave it off and you'll never know the difference. Because the buttplate fits into the stock, the top screw is more the sufficient to keep everything in place.

It's not a super critical screw. Find a screw and nut that are similar and put them in there. Take the sling loop and screw and stick them in the trapdoor so you don't lose them if you ever want to put a sling back on.

Thanks all for the comments! I followed Twdmar's advice and found a bolt pretty close in size to the factory one and along with the correct nut, problem solved!! The tricky part was trying to hold the nut in place while screwing in the bolt. This involved a paring knife and scotch tape ( :
