AR-15 Reload Question

Any very general ideas on accuracy of 55 gr. bulk Win/Rem. soft point load expectations out of the AR platform? May end up loading for a buddies AR who uses a Red Dot Eotech system with a 3X magnifier (I thnk it is).

No way of knowing the result until you actually do some shooting with you buddies rifle. If it has a good barrel it may shoot OK. It has been about 30 years ago that I shot a good number of Rem. 55 gr sp with Accurate 2230 in a Savage bolt rifle that was really accurate. I killed a bunch of groundhogs with this combo. I have a bunch of WW 64 gr sp that shoots really well in a Bushmaster AR and a Stoner AR.

55 FMJ, SP, Red Dot sight, minute of man ammo is plenty good.

25.0 gr. Benchmark
Any primer,
2.250" col
55gr SP

This load has performed well in all of my ARs

This guy did a series of videos on loading bulk buckets for ARs. He got basically 1MOA with good ones and the bulk 55 PSP bullets are capable of that. I loaded a bunch of 223 with 25 IMR 4895 and a 55 V-Max and got 1/2 MOA in my AR. In this series of videos extruded powders and in particular 4895, ARComp and 8208XBR shot well. My bulk training ammo is loaded with 26 (ish) W748 and a Hornady FMJ bullet. It shoots well enough

I agree with Riflewoman. In a good service rifle, well made 55 grain soft points and varmint bullets are able to hold the X ring at 300 yards and even mediocre stuff can hold the 10 ring.

The X ring is 3” at 300 yards, and the 10 ring is 7 inches, so that 10 ring is roughly 2.33 MOA.

26 - 26.5 gr Win-748 with 52 - 55 gr bullets.

Excellent powder if you wanna loads tons in the least amount of time.
Very accurate too.

My very first year prairie dog hunting I was shooting some Dogtown 55 gr spitzer bullets out of my AR. Nothing special about the AR. I was particularly disappointed in how many ricochets I could hear "whine" downrange. I haven't used that type bullet while shooting PD since. I also am looking for something much more destructive to quickly end the dogs stay.

I picked up some Hornady 55 SP bullets (2265 or 2266). Thought they would be an improvement over FMJ's for plinking. I was really disappointed with the accuracy of the Hornady bullets. And I have shot them in some rifles (bolt and AR) that can shoot decently well. I read someone say they were good for shooting pop cans. I tend to agree.

If I want an inexpensive bullet that shoot well and comes apart easily, I will go with the Speer 4708 52 gr HP's. You can find them below $100 per thousand pack in normal times.

Many years ago I shot those Speer 52s in a 220 Swift around 4000 fps. Talking about blowing stuff up. I shot a lot of crows in peanut fields back then. Looked like you set off TNT in one when you hit it. They were extremely accurate also.

Modern processes make pretty consistent bullets.

However there are so many makers in so many places that acceptance for NATO standard 5.56x45 especially with a penetrator off center are surprisingly low. At least I was surprised.

I use 25.5 or 26 gr w748 with 55 gr Ballistic tips in my AR. Shoots great. 9 twist barrel.
