AR-10 in 260 Rem AI... What's required?

I had my heart set on a Savage model 12 LRP in 260. Plan is to use it in Designated Marksman and PRS events in my area. I'm shooting a Barnes Precision AR-15 now with Krieger 20". Already posted some 0.172" three shot and 0.501" seven shot groups. I'm a fan of Barnes Precision.

He has an AR-10 coming out any day. I want one, irregardless of my Savage intentions. What I'm wondering now is have my cake and eat it too thoughts. Heard I could put a 260 barrel in a 308. If this is the case, can I get a heavy target barrel chambered in 260 Rem or 260 AI and just add it to an AR-10?

Thanks for any thoughts you may share.

Dan

Yes on the 260 probably not with the 260 AI. Too steep of a should and not enough body taper to feed right in an auto loader. I put together a 260 Rem AR 10 several years back and was rather disappointed. Aside from getting a bad barrel from a manufacturer (chamber was cut off concentricity with the bore) I also learned that you cannot use the good high BC 139-142gr bullets in an AT 10 type magazine. Also learned that VLD type bullets do not feed well in feed ramps that are also cut for bolt lugs, like those in an AR10. My recommendation, don't waste your time or money. Stick with the savage for 260 and get the AR10 in 308 it will function much better and you will be happier in the end. Take it from someone who knows.

I thought about the exact thing, but in 30* improved to help with feeding.

I can`t say that the 40* imp won`t work, but i`m pretty sure the 30* imp will without issues.

Whitley has the 30* imp dies and reamer prints.

My intent was a fast repeating calling gun for shooting yotes.

Would this platform be better for a 6.5 Creedmoor? I plan on using Lapua 139 gr Scenars. Already bought 2,000 in fact, along with enough H4350 to go with. Carts in front of horse, I realize. I'm impulsive at times. Read the 6.5 Creedmoor is slightly shorter case and may accommodate longer bullets, with regards to magazine limitations. Any thoughts?

Dan

YES, CERTAINLY!!!! the 6.5 creedmoor was designed to use the 139-142gr bullets and fit in an AR10 style box magazine. It is a slightly shorter case allowing you more room to seat the bullet out and not go over mag length. IF I were going to do that project over again, I would do a 6.5 creedmoor for certain.

Thanks Mason. And to be clear, all I would have to do is order a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel and put it on the AR-10? That's all that's required? Sounds too simple. Hah.

Dan

Yes, but make sure the head-spacing is right.

6.5CM even keeps your .308 mags.

Or I could ship you this: ready to run.

It was built for Scenars and H4350.

I compete in "tactical" competitions with a cmmg/dpms LR260. Our monthly shoot is only to 600 yards, so I use the 123 amax. It shoots it accurately. The increased rate of fire of a semi-auto can be a nice advantage.
