APPLIED BALLISTICS FOR LONG RANGE SHOOTING

1911cwp

You don't know what you don't know.
I purchased this book and CD to prepare for a LR Shooting Course. The author is Bryan Litz. I find it informative and is a real help. Unfortunately I am having a problem seeing all the data on the screen when using the software. Is anyone here using it and can be of some help? TNX

So, I reloaded the software and installed more Java and it works. Now, on my laptop running Windows 7 it won't load. I have no idea why not. It is trying to load under Adobe but it won't work.

BTW, Thank You for the help. I mean that. It takes something to come into the frey and try to help and I appreciate it. Really. Bruce

Some random thoughts on the software and various operating systems: there seems to be an issue with how Windows 7 handles .jar files and other facets of Java - my new win 7 machine won't run it either; because I have other old machines (seldom throw an old computer away, lol), there hasn't been any pressure to chase down the issue, but when I do, I'll post the answer. The .jar files light off and run fine on Win Vista and XP, so they handle Java differently. Now for the kicker; since Java and .jar files are relatively hardware and operating system agnostic, it came as no surprise (but a pleasant bonus), that my little netbook that runs a Linux OS distribution I installed on it as an experiment to speed it up (Mint 7; I'm not a Ubuntu fan) runs the software just fine.

First, let me thank all of you for your suggestions. "The Snake" got me going and the program runs fine now. Once agina. thank you all. Take care Robert and thanks for the conversation.

Would you share the fix in detail with the list and then maybe we could have the details pinned up top. I'm sure as time goes on many will want or need the info.

Java was installed properly on the machine but the file type (.jar) was associated improperly to both Adobe Reader and Java with Adobe being the primary application. After validating Java was properly installed, we right clicked on the Java app and choose "Open With". From there, you can choose to open with Java and select the option to always open this file type with this application. Problem solved.

You can validate that Java is installed properly by going to "www.java.com/getjava" and selecting "Do I have Java" under the download button. If you get prompted to allow the oracle program to run, choose yes allow and it will show you the current Java version installed. If you don't have Java installed, you can click "Free Java Download" button to install it and go from there.

There really should be no issues with running Java programs on Windows 7 other then improperly installed Java, Java version too old or the file association not being set properly. Well, unless your machine has some major problems.

Best of luck to all.

Thanks for saving us a bunch of tinkering - it now runs on my Win 7 machine, too, though there was a small glitch.

To anyone else having this problem, Oracle's Java update adds the latest version when you follow the directions in the post above, but doesn't remove the previous version(s) on your machine as part of the process, which is what caused the small glitch (it started to load, then returned an error message, which is farther than the Win 7 machine ever got before, lol)). Once you have installed the latest version of Java (version 7, update 10 tonight, I believe), go to the Windows Start menu, click on Control Panel and click on the Uninstall application. Uninstall any previous versions on your machine and you should be fine. Worked for me, thanks to TheSnakes timely directions.
