Anyone using the 6.5x47L for 1KBR?

Interested to hear if anyone has tried it and noticed any increase in ballistic performance and more importantly agging performance than any of the BR based cases?

We have several GB 1K BR shooters using the cartridge with very good results on the nearly always windy Diggle Ranges in northern England, or even windier Gelston south west Scotland in our UK version of Heavy Gun (5 round groups as per Light Gun). These are custom built rifles but not true HG BR examples being 'Tactical' or F-Class builds. The smallest HG 'aggs' are usually being made by our emerging true heavy rifles though which so far have either been chambered in 'big things' (but so far not doing well) or the straight 6BR (often winning). At least one 40lb + monster rifle shooter is in the process of upgrading to the 6 Dasher right now, so we'll see if that gives him even more of an edge.

For some reason, I don't think we have any LG competitors here using this cartridge other than in the 6mm wildcat version whose owner is doing well with it but not quite as well as the BR / dasher shooters. This is a small pool though in the UK compared to your side of the Atlantic with six summer fixtures per annum on each of two venues at the moment.

Thanks Laurie, though I must inform you I'm south of the equator in the land of oz. It's still not all that big compared to f class but I'm keen to have a good crack at it with what is available to me. There are some amazing f class rifles in 6.5 around and I just wondered if it was able to run with the little BR case.

That West Virginia range is as about as far as you can get from our two UK 1K BR ranges in terms of wind protection! As always, if the wind is shifting around, it's getting the blend of precision, external ballistics, and recoil / gun management / speed of shooting optimised. So. the best cartridge for one range or on-the-day conditions won't be for another. It just seems though that the 6BRs and improved BRs take some beating across a good range of conditions in the BR discipline at any rate.

Another factor is whether it's a dedicated BR rifle, or expected to do other jobs. Personally, I simply shoot my F-Class rifles in long-range BR, enjoy myself, but don't seriously expect to beat specialist HG rifles unless I fall very lucky - and falling that lucky over four groups and a timespan of 40-50 minutes is asking a bit too much of Lady Luck! I know you guys and ladies 'Down Under' like your 6.5X47Ls for F and the cartridge certainly produces an excellent compromise mix of external ballistics, precision, and light recoil.

I've changed my views on cartridges recently even for my compromise mixed discipline usage. I thought my 284 Shehane Barnard P built to as high a spec as you can sensibly go short of really exotic BR orientated gear and now retired from F-Class would be the ideal rifle of those already in my gun cabinet for 1,000 BR. However, having played around a bit, I find I can shoot my tame 7mm-08 short/mid-range Savage PTA based F-Class rifle - which barrel aside is built to a considerably lower specification (on paper anyway) - better in BR when taken in the round. That's 160gn Sierra TMKs at c. 2,830 fps MV compared to 180gn Scenar Ls at a bit higher speeds from the Shehane. It can only be a recoil/gun handling issue, both producing similar groups at shorter distances.

I shoot 6.5-47L in both 600 & 1,000 yard comps. Have done pretty well with too,
As for velocity, I don't really see much more than with a 6 Dasher shooting my current load but I'm going to switch away from RL16 and see if I can improve it. RL16 just doesn't have the density needed to get enough in the 6.5-47L case; especially mine due to short freebore.

There is one guy shooting it at Williamsport. It is a true light gun (17 pound) and he shoots it both classes. He is doing really good and winning a lot of relays against the heavy 60 to 90 pound guns. Shooting good scores and groups. Williamsport is about the hardest 1000 yard range I ever shot on. The winds can be finicky and brutal. Matt

I'm an F-Class shooter, not a BR. IMO if you really want to go with a 6.5mm you should consider the 260AI. Its just a little taller case that gives you just enough boiler room to hit the ~3,000 fps node, without the barrel life penalty of the 6.5x284. The 6.5L can't get there without fast powder and short barrel life.

In BR speed is not important. Accuracy trumps speed. It seems of all the 6.5 cartridges the 6.5x47 seems to be more accurate. Till it came out the 6.5 was pretty much dead in 1000 YARD BR. Matt

I like 6.5x47 lapua an have shot very well at a 1000yd with it I run a variant of that case with good efficiency.here is a 3 shot group with 140 grain hybrids

I had a 6.5x47L rifle built based on what I had read about the cartridge and also since there is Lapua ammo and brass and no case forming needed. I do not have much experience, but I have shot it at Williamsport at 1,000 yards and am happy with my results. Shoots great at 100 and 200 at my home range too, with just a change in the scope mount.

Fortunately I have a really good supply of H4350 also!
