anyone used a kimber action for build??

howdy fella's, i have a slow twist kimber pro-varmint 22-250 that i have gotten a little bored with. i think that i'm a little more capable than the rifle, (very little); which brings me to my question. how good are these actions to build off of? not looking for bench rest quality, just some bragging rights with my shooting buddies while we're out shooting at whistle pigs. would i be better off to find a howa or cz donor? thanks for your input.

oh, caliber would be 6x22-250ai or 6xc, undecided on that as well. i'm also not opposed to using a savage or winchester action, just not a remington fan. thanks, seth

I have thought about the same thing. It is a good, straight action w/ short lock time. My concern is that they made the actions to minimum dimensions to save weight. The goal is a stiff, robust action to improve accuracy. In the end I am sure it will work fine, if using for benchrest one might consider a sleeve but...?

that's an excellent point, which i had not really thought about; but as this rifle will see some deer, and ground hog hunting the weight savings will most likely be appriciated. just wanted to ensure the kimber is up to some informal paper punching too. would sleeving the action be helpful if keeping the loads pretty moderate.

The quality of barrel you choose and the smith that builds the rifle are going to be the determining factor, not the action. The Kimber action is a good action and is capable of performance that few shooters will ever reach. I sent a new unfired Kimber 84M 22-250 Varmint to Mike Bryant and was so concerned of all the internet blather about crooked chambers, uneven locking lugs, etc... that I had him go through it. I wanted him to set it back to a AI and I wanted it to feed and it was important that the basis for the rechamber, ie action and barrel be straight, to spec and true. He said it was as straight as they come, he set it back and it feeds from the mag and shoots 5's with boring regularity.
